Houseboats are once again at the centre of a dispute in West Kelowna.

A group of houseboat owners who were told to move their boats this summer are challenging the district of West Kelowna in court.

The mayor of West Kelowna says the houseboats are in violation of a zoning bylaw.

The district recently obtained a license of occupation over Gellatly Bay, where the dispute began this summer. The houseboats were ordered to move, and eventually they did.

The houseboat owners at the centre of the dispute say that the district does not have the authority to boot them from the area they are now moored in.

Houseboat owners say the district has overstepped their boundaries.

Approximately a dozen boat owners have joined forces to hire lawyers, and challenge the district in court.

Houseboat owner Keith Newcomb says the court fight could cost up to $40,000 in lawyers fees.

A judge will now have to decide whether district's bylaws give it the authority to prevent boats from being moored on a section of Okanagan Lake.
