View Full Version : Programmable Generator Starting

I know the majority of RV's have an ECM (Electronic Control Module) where you can preset a certain voltage, say 11.5v, and when the batteries drop to that voltage the generator will kick on and charge the batteries. I've been thinking about adding this onto our boat. Does anyone have one installed on their boat, and if so, did you install it and how hard was it?

So, what happens if the generator does not start? Excessively cranking a marine generator with a water lift muffler can fill the muffler with water and eventually hydrolock the generator via the exhaust valves.

Hmmmm, good point. Maybe I'll just invest in a bow and stern thruster....hahaha

Xantrex makes an inverter system that does just that. I've been told there's a lot of programming that ensures the gen won't hydrolock.

If it were a fuel injected generator, then I can see how it would be pretty easy. Adding the right sensors to an older carbed generator would seem to be the problem.

I used the Deepsea DSE710 control on our diesel, you can set the glow plug timer for the choke using a solenoid if it is not fuel injected, as far as the water lift muffler problem, don't have an answer for that, we don't have that problem.

houseboat2 - you do not have a waterlift muffler?

Crank any type of engine connected to a waterlift muffler long enough without it firing and it will fill up the waterlift muffler, flood your engine via the exhaust valves, and hydrolock the engine.

My Generator pipe runs down hill to muffler, and down hill from there to just above the water line. I Think the DSE710 will attempt to start 3 times, then will not attempt any more and a warning is displayed, so if you have a water lift muffler this will not allow it fill enough to hydro the engine. You can go to their website and look at them, you can down load the book on them before you buy. Really simple to wire up and set up, had no problems with it, have one in our bus as well. Forgot to mention that you will need a adjustable voltage switch with this one, you can buy them from 10 dollars, to 150 dollars, there is a multitude of them on ebay.
If you look around there are generator controls that have the low voltage feature built into it, but off hand don't remember which it is. I found the first one someone was getting rid of and bought it for 56 dollars, decided to stay with same kind and model, so the second cost 96 dollars new, and around 20 for the adjustable voltage switch.
