    Volvo Penta 280 outdirve

I got Volvo Penta 280 outdrive. The electric motor, that rise and lower the outdrive is burn up and planing to replace. I do not know much about I/O system. Can I start the engine with outdrive up position?. Thanks.

Start the engine - yes. Put the outdrive in gear - yes, but do not, because it will put too much strain on the U-joints.

Do you need to raise and lower the lower unit? My houseboat had issues with the trim rams and instead of spending thousands on new ones, I had them taken apart, they put a piece of aluminum pipe inside them and put them back together. That way they are stuck in the down position. I have a 58 ft boat and I don't know when I would ever need to trim the motors up??? May impact resale down the road but if I need to fix then, I will. Or adjust the price.
