I have a 1970 50' stardust cruiser powered by 2 mercruiser 160 inline engines with aplha 1 outdrives. The out drives have trim cylinders but also have aluminum bars attached to the trim cylinders making them rigid. Another boat hit my boat in the marina and broke the aluminum bars on 1 of the out drives. Now when i engage reverse that out drive raises out of the water. My question is do I need trim cyclinders at all on this boat? I have to replace the solid bars so my outdrive will no longer kick up during reverse. I dont know what these trim cylinders ever did on a 50' boat that goes 12 mph. Thanks for any advice on this.
