Thread: Davit motor/winch

    Davit motor/winch

My boat is 20 years old and I have owned it for about 5 years. The Davit Winch was not installed and had a bad switch if I remember correctly. I brought it home and the motor does not work at all. Until now, I have never needed it.

I have a waverunner I want to store on top next summer. I'm thinking I might be better off replacing the motor. The cable/rope is very rusted etc as well. I've done a few google searches but thought I'd ask the experts around here.

Best places to find these winches? Make sure I have the power/capacity to do what I want. etc.

    Thanks

I think you can buy those winches at any auto or tool supply place. Check out Northern Tool or Tractor Supply.

I read something about using a winch for the front of a truck or ATV isn't the same. For example the load capacity is false. Pulling 3000lbs on the ground is different than pulling 3000lbs up and down. I have NO idea if that is true? I guess for me 3000lbs is 3000lbs regardless? Sort of like what weighs more a lb of lead or a lb of feathers. both are still a pound.

I just want to make sure with kids around I have a crane that will lift the PWC up safely.

I strongly suggest that you check the rating on the original winch. I bet it is 500 lbs or maybe 750 - that is about what jet skis weighed 20 yrs ago. New jet skis - especially three seaters - weigh a lot more. Whatever the winch is rated at is what the davit and davit support structure is rated at. I am sure there is a safety factor built in there somewhere, but I would not lift a 1000 lb jet ski with a structure designed to lift 500 lbs.

So, make sure that the entire structure is built to lift/support the weight - not just the winch.

It says 3300lb. It is a Rule V33S The waverunner is about 700lbs

My boat has two davits - one on the roof that is rated at 500lbs and one on the swim platform that is rated at 1,500. I still question what the rating of the entire system is.

I'll have to go look at the specs. I know the paperwork from the actual order to the builder is on the boat. It is a 1995 Lakeview. The crane is bolted to the top deck and then goes down through the swim deck.
