I bought my first houseboat last August. Its a 1970 34' Drift r-cruz.  I'm currently a liveaboard on Long Island. I want to install a steering station on top. Does anyone have any advice or know where I can get info on what I need to do. I'm handy but have never done any work on boat steering.

I'm also thinking of putting a hot tub on top. Any thoughts? Am I totally insane?

Maybe, maybe not. Steering is possible, boat is too small to support a hot tub.

Doug,

WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Have to agree with OHB on both counts. Forget the tub! I'd imagine your boat now has cable steering. If it's hydraulic MUCH the better. Have no idea how to locate, but I would think in the NY area there would be several businesses devoted to dismantling and salvaging boats. Only feasible choice for installing a fly bridge would be to buy complete fiberglass assembly from a damaged/salvage boat. Even better would be complete with gauges, wiring, and hydraulic steering for top and bottom. Keep in mind this doesn't need to come from a boat identical to yours. Most any cruiser type boat would have suitable equipment. If you could buy and disassemble parts you need, reinstalling would be easier (if you take pics and notes).

Unless you are lucky enough to find one salvage, or talented enough to build one cheaply, a good flybridge installation could cost between 4-5000. Unless you are emotionally attached to the boat, don't put that much money in it. If you can locate the controls inexpensively, you could always buy a salvage "center console" and use that. If teleflex cable steering, they do make a remote installation that hooks into your current unit. If you have a Chrysler inboard, you may have to modify the shifter by adding an electric solenoid. best solution is to get someone else that enjoys driving to drive while you are up top relaxing until you find a boat with bridge already on it...you'll be much money ahead with less aggravation!

I have a chrysler inboard and dana chrysler outdrive and I am adding a flybridge I am having a hard time locating another controller.  What do you mean electric solenoid?

For the Chrysler/Dana outdrives, adding a flybridge shifter can cause complications in shifting. The lower station actually has 3 cables - 1 for throttle (no problem hooking to that one) 1 for gears and 1 for the clutch, which is where the problem can arise. I have seen an electric shift model control used on the flybridge, with the electric shift wiring connected to a solenoid valve on the transmission unit, which will energize the clutch. Marysville Marine should have the technical expertise and parts to get you what you need to make it work correctly.

HI all.   Thanks for the comments. Alreadygone she's not a tub. She's a great boat. OK so she needs a new engine. 3 yrs before I bought her she was completely refurbished. New decks and interior. They just never did any work on the motor. I'm thinking of putting a new 4 cylinder in. Will this be enough to power her. Not looking to run any races just to get from here to there while sipping my martinis. I'm planning on taking a 2 week trip in July going through the South shore bays of Long Island.
About the flying bridge, I picked up and old center console to mount on top. I'll see what I can do about the controls. There are a few abandoned boats in the marina I'm in maybe I can salvage parts from them.

I'll keep you informed how it goes.  I should have some pics to post soon.

"will this be enough power?" Depends on how fast you want to go. 5-6 knots, yes it's enough power. I run my 35' Driftrcruise with 120 hp; it's more than I need.

Why not go back with the original engine/drive application? Those 318 Chryslers are hard to beat and not that costly to rebuild.

The old engine is a rust bucket. Finding parts has been a real challenge. I went out yesterday and bought a new  merc 4 cylinder.

Enginetamer: I live in a marina in copiague NY. Owner just sold it to build condos. (gotta move). There are a bunch of old boats around that he's getting rid of.
