My concern is lightning. How vurnerable is a houseboat that is caught in a severe electrical storm. What measures should be taken?

Lightening is gonna strike the tallest object. If you can get in a cove where land is considerably taller than your boat you're pretty safe. I'd be awful nervous out in large open area. Keep passengers away form ext. walls and metal. You, on the other hand must hang onto the wheel!

Take a good look at the HBs profile. Lightning is in a hurry obviously, so it won't want to make sharp turns. If allowed to flow fast & straight thru a good conductor to ground, it leaves little damage. Only when it has to "hunt" a path does it get ugly. It likes "surface paths", that's why a pipe is better than a wire for a path. That's also why it likes circuit boards in equipment rather than the little #12 grounding wire on the frame.
.
Not that any of the above is practical or pretty or handy but give it what it wants most & it will leave quickly. Nothing more than the loud "kerrack" and jumpy nerves as a memory. As mentioned above, don't be in a position to be part of the path. Always give it a better option & a change of underwear will be the worst that happens to you.

Radiowaves..that incident reminds me of what happened to me on Memorial Day weekend several years ago. I was cruising down the lake and the TWRA (game warden) started following me and then turned on the lights and sirens. I immediately slowed down only to see a news anchor and cameraman in the front of his boat waving me to proceed, which I did. The obnoxious TWRA officer, Richard, then sped up beside me and told me to stop. I have always been helpful to these guys in rescue situations and am not intimidated so I got on the hailer and told him to make up his mind on what i was to do. Anyway, all this was "made for tv" and he had a smartass attitude. He wanted to see everything! When I was producing 3 of my 40 life jackets, I noticed that neither the camera man or the anchor man had a life jacket in his boat. With a laugh, I threw two of them down to "Richard" and told him he might need those and to leave them at the marina for me later. He threw them back on my boat and sped away madder than hell, rudely making a wake as they all do! Needless to say, none of that footage made the news that evening!
