I am not new to boating but very new to houseboating. I am
interested in purchasing a used Gibson in the 30k range. It
looks like I can get a mid 80's 36ft model. This model looks
like it will work well for the Admiral and the 2 deckhands (4&6
yr old girls) . I will spring for a survey but before I do
would like to do as much investigation as possible to avoid
spending money to find problems that are obvious. I have a
few questions that I am in hopes you will be able to assist me
with..
1. In this year range Gibson are there any known issues/problems
that are common?
2. Is the wiring in this model normally up to date? (I have read
about some bad stories)
3. Most of the ones I can afford have a single engine I/O.
How difficult is it to handle a 36 ft boat when
docking?
4. Are there any must have features?
5. Aside from kicking the tires, what can I look at to get a
good feel of the structural integrity of the craft?
Thanks for any insight you can provide on my future purchase.
Watch for deck problems, weak and springy, cracks. They are good boats. I have a 1989. I love it.
I would recommend twin engines, but one will also work. It is easier to handle a twin.
I have had no wiring problems and all works well.
Must have features depends on the individual. A/C, generater, GPS, depth sounder, spot lights, windlass, full kitchen, large size refrigerator is nice. Sound system. Barbeque grill. Commode that works. Water heater.
