I have a mid 80's Jamestowner 50' houseboat, standard design with bedroom in back and two bunkbeds in hallway.  I am wanting to put a 3 person hot tub on the top over the load bearing wall in the back section of the boat.  The tub weighs about 2500 lbs.  Was wondering if anyone has any advice, suggestions or experiences.

First off,Welcome Aboard!!!

No personal experience, but from what I've seen you're boat's big enough for this to be doable. Good friend put a soft side 4 seat tub on his 14X68' Sharpe with no ill effects. Set about 2-3 inches lower in water when tub in operation. Will also require a dedicated circuit be added for power.

Hope to see you here again.

Bob

prepare to replace your roof in about 3 to 5 years if this is the original one...but if this is a cost worth considering I'd say go for it, as it would be very enjoyable.. plus thats what we're all really after... Also, make sure you put back on the cover, as there was a boat in the marina here last year that filled up during a big rain storm and the hot-tub came crashing down thru....and Hey, welcome to the forum

thanks for the response.  I was wondering if I would have to replace the roof every 3 to 5 years or just the original one.  Also, was wondering what style of boat your buddy had and how big of a tub he had.  Once again thanks for the response.

Referencing the 3-5 years would only be for the original roof, if you even get that out of it with a hot Tub on top. This is just because the original roof was not designed to hold the weight. Once you rebuild the roof, I'm sure you will reinforce the section you would like for it to sit, and you will get a longer life span out of your roof. When new houseboats are designed to hold a hot tub they are generally reinforced in these areas...
