We are leaving on May 26th to rejoin our friends who are doing the Great Loop. We will join them at Couyman's Marina on the Hudson River just south of Albany, NY and proceed through the Erie Canal. This should be a quiet relaxing trip compared to our hairraising adventures on the Carolina Coast last year on the same boat. I will give you all a report when I return. If you want to follow their saga you can check out their website at justusboating.com where you can read all about the trip. Last year I wrote all the daily log entries while we were aboard and will do so again on this trip. You can find those under the name Rusty. I will give you a summary when we get back in case any of you are contemplating such a trip.

I guess the judge got lost in the Erie Canal. I read the page for the looper friends he joined and read his posts. He got off the boat sometime ago to pick up dining chairs and head home.

Maybe he could not find his way back to the computer.

That is erie.

Alright you guys. I am alive and well. The truth is we took nearly a week to drive those dining room chairs home. We went to visit friends in Pennsylvannia and then to Washington, DC and all through West Virginia. Then as soon as I got home I had two heavy court calendar days and I left for a week on the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia from Columbus to Savannah and then back across the state to Columbus again for my 40th high school reunion. Then back to work this week playing catchup and painted the exterior of my house. I am whipped. Since all of you can go on the website and read of our adventures I will not bore you with a repeat here but will comment on whether a houseboat would fair well in that area. We did not see any houseboats on the Erie Canal until we got to Sylvan Lake, NY on Lake Oneida. However any houseboat could have made this trip including crossing Lake Oneida in good weather. But I am not sure about going out on the Great Lakes in one. Weather can come up fast and furious. I guess it all depends on how much risk one is willing to take with family and friends. I try never to take risks in a boat. It was a fun trip. When they get toward the end of the loop on the Tennessee I hope to take my old Gibson downriver to meet them as a surprise but the high cost of fuel may make me just drive downriver by car and wave at them from the bank.

Glad you found the computer again, welcome back.

I think you should save for that fuel, bite the bullet and run that boat to meet your friends. You only live once. I know it would be great time for you and your wife, after following you with the loopers. You will remember YOUR boat trip with your friends with many smiles, just as you do of the time you have spent with them on their boat. I can tell they miss you.

Just think of all the radio chatter you guys would create while motoring along side each other.

Judge...just increase those "court costs" a little and make that trip to meet them! Welcome back! Did you see any of the rental houseboats on the Erie Canal? In pics, they look somewhat European and very reasonably priced during the season. We'd love to try that one week if we can just find the time.

I saw two rentals that looked like European canal boats. Both were tied up and I never saw one moving. They have a single inboard with a huge rudder on the rear with a tiller arm. The pilot would stand on a raised platform to steer so they could see over the cabin roof. I wonder if they have a front thruster as they are awfully long and narrow to steer with just that rudder. There are other houseboats for rent up there like Gibsons but I never saw one on the canal.

Hey Judge,

Congratulations to your friends Ken and Dracy who just completed the "Loop"

I have really enjoyed ther daily posts.

I also found one poster on some site doing the same, whereas; the vessel was a 50" Gibson Vee Drive and stated he felt sorry for those in a trawler on the Great Lakes.

What do you think about the Gibson 50' for that trip.

I am dreaming of my own some day. Just want to know what boat to dream about.

I read an article in an old houseboating magazine just last week about a couple that took a 50' Gibson on the Loop and they did it the long way. Try www.houseboatingadventuresmagazine.com/ and look at issue #15. I had a hard time ever getting the text of the article but finally managed. I would never do it myself but if you have time to wait for just the right weather each time you move then it can be done. For instance they waited 4-5 days in Panama City-Appalachicola area before crossing the Gulf.

So did your friends, they waited in Appalachicola for several days and then ran to the East coast of Florida as well, as did many other loopers there with them.

I really enjoyed that article, as well as "justusboating".
Gibson story struck home for obvious reasons.
The Gibson is very comfortable boat, nice to know it did well on the loop.
