last weekend I tried to figure what my boat was costing me in fuel, (I know should not have done it, but I did)
2 454 V Drives 4.66 gph (both, not each)
Westerbeke 8.5 KW 1.52 gph
Does that sound about right?

on the engines it depends on what rpm's you are turning. on my monticello my 454's get .96 MPG @ 2000 rpm which by my gps is 10 mph. On my gen i get approx 1.2 gph on a 12.5 kw westerbeke.

Millertyme, so your gph on the 454 would be 9.6
I must have figured mine wrong.
here is what I did, tell me if it makes sense.
I'v recorded hobbs reading on each fill up.
my generator sips (gulps) from the starboard tank
Last fill up I filled the port first, recorded gallons (17)
filled the starboard 72 gal total,
72-17=55gal in starboard, assuming both engines use about the same gas 55-17=38 gallons used by gen.
so gen ran 25 hours 38/25=1.52gph gen
engines each ran 6 hours 17/6=2.333x2=4.66gph

I run at 1700-2400 rpm must of the time. Unless I'm in hurry to get to the laborday fireworks display. But that another story.

The only absolute positive way to know what you are using is to install flowmeters but why bother. The only thing they will do is help you to find your most efficient running speed which you probably already know and after that they will just constanly remind you of how much money you are burning up. Remember, if you cannot afford to say to hell with the price of fuel, I am going boating; then you do not need a boat. By the way, mine stays tied to the dock most of the time now. Gas is $3.59 on my section of the Tennessee.

After reading specification sheet on hundreds of boats in Powerboat Reports, Power and Motor Yachts, etc for years, and seeing figures basically the same for a 350 chev, regardless of the boat it's in (same for big blocks) both of your figures sound pretty optimistic, unless you're staying below 2,500rpm. That ain't a bad idea,,,,come to think about it!

BannanaTom, odd that you should ask but my boat is always for sale. In fact I am looking at two others right now though I am always looking as I have a boater's disease that seems to have me always looking. Should you be interested please contact me at 770-528-1761. Also you are also correct that I should not own any boat. They are a pure money pit but I am addicted.
