I was wondering what are the rules or regulations to living on the
water and not being docked? I see people with there boats in open
water, and they use their dinghies to access the shore. Is this
allowed? How do they get to a store to get food etc? do they drag a
scooter on it? There is this one boat in particular that I’ve
seen for the last 2 years right off shore and I notice he
doesn’t even have a dinghy that I can see. the closest store
to him is about 1/2 mile in shore. I am pretty sure he lives
off it as it is very close to shore, and in a secluded area by a
bridge. I always thought that would be great if you weren't to high
maintenance and wanted to save some money for awhile. If someone
could help me out with the facts about living like this I
would appreciate it.
What waters Duke? Western lakes are governed by
different rules than other waters. You have to remove your boat
every 30 days (I think), and wait a certain number of days before
relaunching. In other waters you can't block or hamper a
navagation channel. In other areas, certain coves or bays may
belong OR be controlled by someone. They then may rent a mooring
(what ots called if no dock is present.). Usually you are allowed
to float ON the water but when you "touch" land by tieing up or
even dropping your anchor on someones muddy bottom, Then you are
trespassing. Crazy as that sounds.
Forgiveness is easier to obtain than permission ONLY works
for a day or 2 (if that long), so ask first. I know a fella who has
a pretty cove all to his self because he acts as the watchman for
the oil co. that owns the spot. There is a lid for every pot so to
speak. You just have to find yours.
There are some real miminalists that need only a cot & a
roof. Then there are the ol chubby guys like me that need
electricity & all that it provides. Here to, you will know best
what your level of comfort is.
We have a small lot & mobile home, a canal @ the rear of
the property leads out to the bayou our houseboat is moored in
(state land, no issues). We use our skiff to go the 1/4 mi. to the
HB. This works for us. Good luck, you'll find a spot. Water living
is great!
