We have been researching GPS systems for sometime now and still havent made a decesion yet. There are so many to choose from and we want to get the most bang for the buck. Someone told me that one of the mapping dvd downloaded to a laptop with a small handheld unit in the window works. Ted you mentioned you had some sort of computer based unit. What are you using and would you recomend it? What are others using out there? Thanks Hidro

Look for one that has or will accept an external antenna; an internal antenna may not work under the roof of your houseboat. Also look for an NMEA output connection, so you can connect it to other devices (computer, VHF, autopilot, etc). Those requirements will thin out your options considerably.

I use an old laptop running off a Garmin 76 handheld. The NOAA charts are free and easily updated, and the laptop gives me a nice big display. I can even make my own charts. I can also remove the handheld and take it in the dinghy with me to go "scouting".

It works for me; though I did have to connect an external antenna as the houseboat roof blocked the signal.

Thanks guys for the info. Ted I will check out the deluo asap. A friend told of an old riverboat captain that is using the handheld with a laptop, easy to see and portable. I like the idea of using the laptop screen as my eyesight aint what it used to be and a 5in diagonal is around 800 bucks. 250 sounds much better.

Disagree about the full sine wave inverter. It may be necessary for a desktop PC but my old Gateway laptop (and newer Dell) both do quite nicely on an inexpensive Vector 175w MSW inverter (about $40 at Big Box). Another option would be a 12v "automotive" power supply for the laptop; available at most computer places.
