While not pressed to sell, wife and I decided to sell boat last fall. Strictly low key, sign on boat and word of mouth. This past Friday a local gentleman and his wife made the decision to purchase. Spent the weekend removing our personal items and pre-agreed upon furnishings. Wore my fat arse out!!

While not presssed, we had overextended ourselves with the whole combination of stall rent, insurance, interest, and the normal costs associated with maintaining a 16'X78' boat. Also seldom had guests, as all kids are too far away to get to enjoy a boat. Plus, just keeping the damn thing clean is a 1/2 day per weekend chore.! We plan to continue boating, probably in a cruiser style boat just big enough to have AC and a genset. Admitidly, the whole houseboat life has spoiled us! But look forward to getting back to boating where a slight bit of wind, or the chance of a thundercloud won't leave us afraid to leave the dock.

Hope the new owners get as much enjoyment from this fine craft as we have!!

Best,

Bob

Unfortunately, rather enjoy forcing my half-baked, opinionated views on you poor souls, so you're not shut of me yet.

We know where your at. In sept. of "09" our financial situation will change and possibly force us to look for a buyer. I do not want to get out of boating but a bottom job is coming up and normal maintenance is killing me. One of these days I will be squirming around in the engine compartment, get a coupla bad cramps and not be seen until the next spring. I know how you feel and do not look forward to the inevitable. Growing old sucks. Golden years my butt. We will make the most of it as long as we can before throwing in the towel so it could still be a while for us. Keep in touch and let everyone know what kind of boat you may purchase. Good luck!

What I’m fearing is a downturn in values on houseboats just like on houses and gas guzzling cars.

I remember my marina in 1999 when I sold my last boat. There were many Gibsons and the like but only two of the mega-houseboats, a 60 footer and a 80 footer. When I went back last year to look into a slip for my new boat they had added several extra finger docks to accommodate all of the mega-houseboats. It was apparent we had just gone through an era of economic boom.

I hear several of those are desperately trying to sell and at least two are bank owned.

Bob,

Down sizing isn't always a bad thing. Good "used" boats keep most of us on the water and improvements can be made at ones leisure. Smart buying of repair items make your dollars go even further. Like CaptMark, the trend on my lake in the past has been replacing aging boats with the mega houseboats. With a 10 year waiting list for a slip, many are buying up the old boats and replacing them. After a while they find the expense hard to justify and find themselves taking on partners. I enjoy my 30 year old boat and when the wind kicks up I practice maneuvers in the harbor while the mega houseboats watch on from their slip.

We have sold our boat twice so far............ one backed out, another just never showed up with the money. Now another couple are making an offer. Geeez..
We are like most every one else, no time to enjoy the boat, and the expense is killing us right now. We too want a smaller cruiser type for now, then a trawler later to travel the waterways.

Gotta watch out for those buyers!

An older couple had a houseboat for sale two buoys over from ours that they had been trying to sell for over a year. This guy was interested. He had a ski boat and SeaDoos and in talking to him he told me he lived two hours away and had wanted a cabin on the lake to stay in on the weekends. The houseboat seller allowed him to extensively check out the houseboat. This included permission to use the houseboat for long weekends to enable the buyer to really see if he wanted it or not. Well, 10 weeks and several houseboat parties later, the buyer decided it was not quite big enough and he was going to wait until the next season to consider buying.

Mark,

ANY seller fool enough to agree to any such agreement deserves what ever they get.

Tell 'em later this season I might come give it a week or two try out .

I bought my 40' Riverqueen for 3500.00, did a quick 90 day note at the credit union, worked on it long enought to make it livealbe, and moved aboard. I have painted, panneled, scrubbed, carpted, floored, plumbed when I've had time, and I'm really enjoying mine. I live alone, and will probably continue to do that for some time, and it suits me to a T. Now if I had a "mama" in my life on a full time basis, I might have the need to buy me a bigger boat, but right now, life is good. I am however looking forward to the day I get my motors running and can actually DRIVE this thing! LOL.
I believe the whole thing is the mind set of the owner. I live aboard, w/stereo and the internet to keep me company, a box of books to read, no tv by choice, and a dog to talk to, if I do'nt want somebody talking back. I like it this way. Wouldn't change it for the world, and let me tell you, this old boat is WAY cheaper to live on that my house was.
