Almost half a century ago, I was among 500 Girl Scouts selected to cruise lazily from New Orleans to Memphis aboard the Steamer Avalon. A glorious trip, it took ten days, with some of voyage at night. The downriver trip for 500 other teenagers, took seven.
I don't remember the speed, maybe 6-8 knots, but it was s-l-o-wwww, with lots of time to admire the passing scene, toot merrily at passing tows, and hang over the stern watching the paddle wheel go splish, splish, splish. It was a wonderful trip, with many intriguing places to stop and poke around, miles and miles of willow thicket along the bank.
You can see The Avalon, by the way, when you go to the Houseboat Show-- she's now known as The Belle of Louisville.
When we reached the end of our journey through Southern history, many of my new friends and I longed to sign on for the next leg of her trip upriver. I envy you the opportunity do just that, and look forward to reading an ongoing account of the trip north. What a splendid way to get to know your new boat inside and out.

Well, I took 32 new pictures of the boat Sunday. It was a beutiful bright sunny day. AgentJ let me know if they came through ok. If not, I'll regroup and send them again. Seem like I have trouble sending large picture files through e mail.
By the way, I updated my email in my profile, sorry about that.
