My winter project and maybe spring has been to refurbish the sleekcraft. I Pulled the engine and the drive and stipped off all the hardware and took it over to the local fiberglass shop.

We filled over 200 holes here and there.

We added a bulk head over the bed area for strenght and to give the area a seperate room feeling.

They found some bad glass in the lifting strakes. They will be ground down and rebuilt. Notice the white glass vs. the grey. The white is broken fiberglass.

That's one heck of a project you have going there. I can almost smell the sweet aroma of epoxy resin .

Keep the pics coming. I'd love to see more as work progresses.

Thanks,
Dave

Ej, what are your plans for the day cruiser? Gel or paint? Original colors or a new scheme? Post some progress pictures.

I'm going to apply gel with a new classic look. Been working on th trailer cleaning her up.

Here we are rounding off the corners on the bow latch bracket. Trailer has been sand blasted and geting ready for painting.

Took the back tires off to help with moving around the lot.

Added a underneath spare tire carrier. Getting prepared for that hot I-40.

A second cut out for additional LED taillights.

I added this slanted box for my trailer light plug. I didn't like the way the plug was alway bent when plugged in.

I'm ditching the OEM 1987 Merc 350 Magnum for something a bit more exciting. A new 502 big block chevy marine engine. I'll get some picks up for it. I have some more progress pics of the boat I still need to ge off the camera.

Bottom's done.

The boat has been flipped back over to repair the other side of the cracks.

The floor was cut out also and they found the glass broken away from the stringers and the hull. Sleekcraft had only glassed one side of the stringers to the hull about 1" out. You could move the stringers from side to side with your hand.

This is a photo of the stringers after they were re-glassed and properly attached to the hull.

A bullhead was added at the bilge area to keep any bilge water from running forward. A 1" plug was added so no water would get trapped forward.

Cut outs for the cleats.

A new floor was put in and glassed over.

Hatch cut in making sure it's a flush fit.

No 525 as she sits with a crane cam and rockers. Did you know Crane shut their doors? Will need to take it easy on the Bravo drive.

I was looking at the boat today and the upper edge of the boat between the arrows is sinking inwards vs the outside edges along the bow and the stern are sloping outwards. I asked Don what's up with this and he told me the weight of the cabin over the years is forcing the edge inwards. Tomorrow they will try to jack it back into position and place bulk heads to correct it.

Man, I do love that lipstick red. Aside from the CarlCraft and the Tahiti, I also have a Dimarco hull. I'll be doing the same to it next year. I think the lipstick red with bright white scallops will do just fine.

Thanks Pirate but I am thinking about retiring and buying a marina

Bow light hole was cut out for this cool motorized bow light I found on Ebay. This should keep the wife from falling in the water after a few on the lake.

The dash area and the bulkhead have been have proved to be a challenge. The sides of the dash where extended down to the floor. This will give the side panels something to finish into. Also a pad was installed at the bulkhead.

I didn't like the square radius corners so you can see on the left the cardboard piece we are playing around with to capture the right look.

The sunken in edge is coming out nice. You can see how it has been turn outwards.

The sectional defining crown edges on the bow will be sanded down to soften the look.

Trailer is back together and it came out nice. I used the clear LED's that turn red or amber when powered. 10" stainless fenders. radial tires, and a stainless bow latch bar with bumpers.

I tried my hand at stainless steel brake lines and inverted double wall flared ends. Still need to add the stainless brake hose and tube clamps.

This is a boat like mine showing the original dash configuration. Like mine the owner added a tach and had to squeeze it close to the other gauges so it would fit inside the back dash cover. The cover only covered the hump area at the steering wheel area.

The dash always looked unbalanced to me and not organized.

The hump was cut out and the dash wash made the same width across. A box was built to cover the entire dash from behind. It will be gel coated with an upholstered pack. Foot rest are being made and will be glassed in to keep people from placing their feet on the couches below.

The back of the boat was capped and should give a clean look.

The nasty looking black burlap looking material on the transom was sand down and re-glassed.

I bought a Barry Grant Demon carb from R & D RACING INC. on Ebay. I took it over to CJ Engineering in Whittier to have it tuned. When dissembled they found the emulsion holes in the plates were never drilled. R & D RACING told me they sell 80 carbs a week and this type of error is going to happen. Tech support at Barry Grant at first said this is how the carb was designed. Later a senior tech came on and said this was a mistake. Anyway, CJ Engineering did a fantastic job with it and hopefully is ready to go.

Moving along and just about finished with the dash mod. Here is rear left and right. This will be covered with upholstery.

End tables have been made. They still need to be fiberglassed and gel coated. A sink and faucet will be cut in on one table along with a in-dash radio. The other will get a switch panel operating everything below. Doors in the front will be cut in and solid fiberglass doors still need to be made up.

Almost forgot, I have decided to do a full cap of the boat. After looking at the back that is already done, I really like the clean look. Pictures next week....
