I know some boats have standard base 12v lamps inside; but regular 12v incandescents are power hogs, fluorescents and 12v LED's are hard to find and expensive. Well I found a site for standard "Edison" base, 12v compact fluorescents.
Like most fluorescents they draw 1/4 the power of incandescents and compared to the ones on the "marine" sites they're almost affordable. Better selection too.

Rated in watts, not "equivalent" watts, so a 13w would replace a 50w.
Choice of "color temp"; the lower the number the "warmer" the color.

I just replaced my deck lights with them. http://www.solarseasy.com/cfbulbs.html

Check out Campingworld if you have one near you also. We bought a 12volt 60watt (15 watts)fluorescent for around $10 there just to give it a try. Seems to work great.

Agree, I think I've seen them there. West Marine has them too (for $19 a pop) but that was the only wattage available until I found the Solareasy site. I bought several 5 watt bulbs, they're brighter than the 15w incandescents they replaced. Now when I'm anchored I can really "light up" and not worry about the power drain.

Yeah, I saw those on west marine when I was looking around for them. $19 is pretty much ridiculous. We could add another D-8 battery and not worry about it for that price.

$10 is more reasonable.

Weve started replacing the A/C bulbs with Fluorescent too. The 'Daylight' fluorescent bulbs look kinda odd at night but during the day it looks exactly like the sunlight.

Like you need 'em in the daylight!!!! But I've found I get used to them (most of the time).

If I really want romance I use candles or oil lamps.

Does anyone have a source for 12 vdc flourescent lights that fit a turn signal type base? I think it's called a bayonet base. All of my overhead 12 vdc lights are of this type and I know they're energy hogs.

Sorry I haven't. But LED's are even better, look at http://www.superbrightleds.com/

In my experience most of those type lights have MUCH brighter bulbs than most folks really need. You can get smaller, less bright bulbs to fit the same socket, at any place that sells auto bulbs.

Thanks, they have 1156 tail light type bulbs with 9 LEDs for under $5 and 24 LED bulbs for under $8. I'm planning on ordering some today. Most people don't realize that a 100w 12 vdc bulb draws 8.5 amps.

Just order a couple for starters; they may not be as bright as you want. They also tend to direct the light rather than radiating it in all directions.

I've had good luck with these:

They're about 100 lumens and I use them for area lighting. Not cheap though.

and they have adapters for your sockets: .
