I am thinking about next year's upgrades and question whether adding a trash compactor would be worthwhile. I have to ferry all of our garbage from our houseboat using a ski boat and can pretty well fill a ski boat with garbage bags after a large family trip.

From those of you with compactor experience, are they worth the cost and effort? If a usual trip gives us ten or twelve bags of regular garbage, how many bags of compacted garbage do you think we would have? I also wonder if the compacted bags get "drippy" or otherwise hard to handle as you smash semi-wet things like paper plates with food left on them. I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has.

I love mine.  On our previous two houseboats, we too lugged trash bags to the shore, not by boat however.  When out at the beach for a weekend, the back deck became the place to put them.  Now that I have a trash compactor I can't imagine living without it.  I purchase my bags at Sears.  They offer two style of bags, plastic or paper with a protective coating.  I have used both and have no problem with leakage.  The best thing about having a compactor is when we walk off the the dock on Sunday we carry one bag of trash with us.  I honestly don't recall using more than one bag for a three or four day stay at the lake with two to five people on the boat.  It's well worth the investment and I highly recommend it.

We do not have one but our friends do and they swear buy theirs.

Really helps reduce the quantity of bags carring back.

Another great trick (Cheaper)

is to buy one of these

Yes the compactor is worth it. I would never be with out one. If it broke tomorrow I would replace it immediately . Look on Ebay & Craigslist you can sometimes find one cheap. I bought a used one and used a can of spray paint to change the color of the door to match the cabinetry.
