There is an auction, 7-27-10, at the Sumerset plant.

That's a shame.

Is anybody here planning to attend? Would this be a good way to purchase galley gear and other bits and pieces? I have quite a shopping list, but can't get away to see for myself.

Hard to believe.

But with so many used boats on the market - who knows when they will be able to come back.

We love our Sumerset and believe that they are definitely one of the best in the industry.

Guess my next boat will be a sharpe

I have heard that the only lake style boat plants open are Horizon, Sharpe & Thoroughbred.
Harbor Master closed . I heard they cut up the molds.

We can't forget Destination Yachts. I ran into Destination Yachts owner Sheldon Graber at our local boat show this spring. We discussed some of the majors that had gone out of business and he added, only half joking, that he was now the largest houseboat builder left standing. I wish him and all the other builders well.

Sad to hear about all the boat builders. I have a Burnscraft which I have heard was where Harbor Master got their original molds. If they did cut up the molds this will end a long line of proven boats in this country.

Lakeview is still in business. My parent's have a 2008 model from them. My dad talked to them a few weeks back. They are only building what someone orders - no spec boats.

And, sadly, Bruce -the owner - has cancer.

I spoke with the man at Harbor Master today and yes they have destroyed the molds. Sad reflection on our economy but the price of new boats just priced a lot of us out of the market for new boats. I think all the manufacturers added too many extras and upgrades. On the other hand the value of our old boats may stabilize or may even go up.

another example of how the new boat buyer is getting the short end of all this, is all those skilled labors who were laid off, several years ago when the market w/south & who had tons of houseboat building experience they had to go get work else where, so what or who is building your boat today.

Yes, that too is another affect.  The marina owners I'm sure walk their docks and shake their heads at all the for sale signs on houseboats.  Did the same thing that occurred in the housing market happen to the houseboat industry?  People wanting more than they can really afford and lenders willing to loan them more than they can pay for.????

The story I heaerd was Harbor Master had a potential buyer for their hull/fiberglass plant on the river in Gallatin, TN. They had to move the molds out in a hurry to clean it up for the buyer so they cut them up and sent them out. The deal fell through.
