The heat last weekend was pretty brutal on the water. I'm thinking of adding something to shade the top deck. Since I have an aft cabin, the deck is pretty long, about 13 feet by about 10 1/2 wide. What are other folks using to stay out of the sun? Obviously there is the option of a custom bimini but what other options are there? I have seen some permanent structures with canvas tops and have also seen the 10 X 10 pop ups used.

We bought some fittings at the local flea market that the vendors use to make their structures. The fittings use 1" EMT conduit. You can make it any size you want. We welded the bottom feet to the top of our top rail and then covered it with shade cloth. Check out my blog and you can see pics of it there. http://fredsfriendlyblogspot.blogspot.com/

Tek Supply sells all sizes of quik pipe fittings. You can buy the pipe at fence suppliers.
When the hardtop blew off our boat in Hurricane Ike I replaced it with an awning comprised of the pipe and fittings. For the cover I just use a $15 silver shade tarp and bungies. They are cheap. If a storm rips it up then no big loss like a sunbrella cover.
I'll try to attach some pictures.

For those that have interest in this thread, I found an interesting idea. These arched awnings are designed for sailboats but this company can custom make other versions. I got a quote of just over 500 dollars for one to fit my deck. shade tree awnings
