What have you done, if anything, to give your houseboat that nautical or 'boaty' look?
Photo's would also be great.

Thanks in advance

I like my HOUSEboat....

In my experience trying to make something "look nautical" ends up tacky.

I tend to agree with you on that. Every so often I run across a truly talented individual that can make anything look like anything they want it to. Unfortunately, I am not one of those chosen few. By asking the question, I figure I increase the chances of running into that individual rather than hope to run into them by chance.
I have seen people turn their garage into an entertainment room and make it look like a wharf. If I did it, it would look like a garage that someone tried to make look like a wharf - but failed miserably.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking forward to more replys even if they are similar to yours.

i think the thing that makes a houseboat look nautical is plain and simple.....just add water

Redoing the stateroom, my first interior design attempt since college. Putting mahogany flooring down because to me that screams nautical. Course I did love black light posters way back then and that is what I am building my design career on.

Roll'em if you got 'em. LOL

By the way, have you looked into Teak and holly plywood for your floors?
1/4" sheets rund about $125 for a 4X8 in my area. They come thicker if you also want it for structural purposes. That is what I am going to do eventually. Very 'salty' looking.

I've always wondered who was/is in charge at some of the houseboat makers interior design centers. Their choices of colors and patterns have not been stellar. LOL We changed curtains and furniture and it made a huge difference. I also agree if you go too nautical it can get out of hand.

Here is a before and after. Not the same angle but you get the idea.

I think you have to more just have an idea of what is nautical without just buying a lot of stuff that looks like a wharf. My wife and mother-in-law have a good eye for it.

That's what I'm talkin'about.

Yesterday, during those bored moments out here in the Gulf of Mex, I started looking at trawlers on Yachtworld.com to see what the visual difference is.
Actually, the difference is quite subtle. Here is what I came up with:
Slightly arched interior roof line.
Darker color on the woodwork.
Usually dark solid panels or beaded board instead of light house paneling.
A few more curved surfaces like rounded tops on doors and doorways and
countertop corners.
The rest is just simply a choice in furniture.
Well, if that is all it takes to keep the Admiral happy, these changes are easy enough to make. It just takes time. I think she is just used to feeling like she is snuggled up in a nest.

I agree 100%. Maybe they ought to hire the same designers that they use in mobile home designs.

BTW, great job in your new interior. Looks like a whole different boat.
