Maybe I am still mentally locked in the world of sailboats and trawlers where dinghy's are a necessity. I dont see too many houseboats with dinghys. Is that because houseboats generally beach themselves?
Anyway, do you or dont you use a dinghy and why or why not?

If you do have a dinghy, how is it mounted and deployed? Resting on swim platform? Roof mounted?

Do I sound like I am ready for retirement and a lifestyle change?

I have 1. On the roof w/crane. It's more of a toy than a necessity. Use it to explore around the boat, just go for a ride, pickup someone from the dock/shore,etc. The wife likes it so I am happy. Now she wants a little whaler instead of the RIB.

Is your crane factory mounted or aftermarket?

Wouldn't be without a dinghy of one sort or another. When not in use I stow it on it's side on the swim platform (no crane required) but when underway I tow it.

I have a ramp that I roll my PWC onto the back deck of the boat. When we don't drag the ski boat with us, we can drop the PWC into the water and run back to the marina for supplies. Thought about putting the PWC on the top deck, but that is where my spa sits. Maybe I need a bigger boat, or less toys? I used to own Zodiac inflatables back in my Alaska days. I bet those would be great to tow behind a houseboat.

This one is factory installed. It is mounted Port side about 15' forward from stern.

For my old boat(57 Carlcraft) I found a used one that was already mounted on a 44' Gibson. We removed it, patched the hole and reinstalled it on the 57'. I mounted it in the rear lower cabin top corner port side.

If I would do it again I would want it at the Port transom corner. That way I could lift from the transom or the side. I have been rafted a few times were I could not offload the dinghy.

Davit's are usually easier to mount and cheaper but they will add to overall length = Higher dockage fees.
I installed davit's on my old 40' Riverqueen and they were very easy to use and worked well. Only drawback was higher dockage.

IF I were to install a crane I'd put it on one corner or the other, so it could reach over the dock and pick up outboards, batteries, or other stuff that's too heavy to handle easily.

I have a West Marine solid bottom dinghy with a 2hp Honda. I can just take it off the dock and toss it on the back deck, the engine can hang on the railing. It's main purpose is the dog boat. I also have a wave runner and use a towdster to pull and hold it when anchoring out....works great.

These are older pics. I have a new dinghy now but same set up. I did add a davit to the back corner to aid with getting it on and off. That took some figuring to add it to a fiberglass hull. I'll try to post some pics of it later.

I like that setup but I would think it would work even better if it tilted, like some boat trailers.

We have a crane, but about all we use it for is hauling up BBQ's & other big stuff! (Don't have or need a dinghy)

we hang a 11' whaler with a 40 hp johnson on the transom with a set of davits. It works great and keeps the old 34' Trojan HB from being bow heavy.
