Do houseboats use hotwater heaters with heat exchangers that will make hot water from either 110V or from engine exhaust water?

We're about to install a small propane on-demand water heater. It'll be interesting to see how that works. When the world was new and all, at least half a century ago, we had one for instant, unlimited, and very hot water in our little travel-trailer that worked most splendidly, and these days there's no pilot light to fuss with. If it works, we'll be very pleased to report, but it won't be this week's bragging.

we have a small 12 gal 120 volt trailer water heater in our gibson. it doesnt take up much room and with 4 people onboard we have never ran out of hot water. i've also had propane and they work just as good, they seem to heat the water quicker but all work fine.

Most don't. This technology was popular on cruisers and trawlers in the past but has gone by the wayside due to cost and safety issues. The water gets a LOT hotter from engine circulation and is a reason for concern.

Mine has a 20 gallon electric. Works great, plenty of hot water when it's just me. When the grand daughters stay we have to conserve a bit. The biggest issue is when on the hook you have to run the gen to have hot water.
Amelia, being in the construction industry, I will tell you that I would be doing exactly what you are planning.

It sure does get HOT!!!!. My small unit gets scarey hot. It can remove flesh. On the up side - it stays very hot most of the day and you need so little of the hot water side diluted with the cold water to make the shower tolerable so in our case it works out good on the sailboat with just a small 37HP diesel. I was concerned about the safety factor with larger motors and more water output how much of a danger would it be.

I know nothing about them. If 2 people were to live aboard, how long would a 40 lb tank last?

The lovely thing about on-demand water heaters is that they heat the water as it's being used. Comes out of the spigot hot, and stays that way until you've used the last of the cold water you brought along. Look, Ma, no hot water tank. When storage space is at a premium, that's a lot of cupboard freed up.

Do these "on Demand" water heaters have some kind of electronic ignition that automatically kicks in when needed or do you have to have a continuous pilot light?
Any guesstimates on gas consumption?
I know when we had a small 11 lb. bottle and all we did was cook with it, it would last over a month. Thats the kind of guesstimating I was hoping to get.

The one we have (as yet still in the box) has piezo electric ignition-- runs on a small battery, AA, IIRC. Turning on the hot water faucet fires it up, I believe, and within seconds, you have very hot water. I hope to be an expert on the subject within the next month...

OK, I bought mine on Ebay. I have a 25 gallon tank on my boat. With my propoane stove, fireplace, and water heater I usually have to fill it once a year. The heater has an electronic ignition and no pilot light. I actually mounted mine on the exterior wall under my Swim Slide. I think the manufacturer I have is Rinai or something like that. I had it for almost 2 years and it works great!!!!

Our boat has a basic 6-gallon RV water heater. It's the one that came with the boat, 24 years old and still works fine. It stays on all summer. It probably uses 2 gallons of propane a month. If that.

We're going to get an on-demand water heater too. And soon!

Unless I am looking in the wrong places these things cost in excess of 1 Kilobuck.
For that price, I could live with a small tank.
Hope I am wrong.
