Ok, the wife and I have decided to pull our houseboat dream off the back burner and have just started shopping for a used boat again. We spent an afternoon with a broker a few weeks ago who was trying to convince us that prices are starting to head back up again. The supposed reason was that manufacters weren't making many new ones under $500K and the supply was starting to dry up for people wanting to move up to better boats. To be clear, we have only seen boats with one broker and plan to see others on the other end of the lake. We are planning to buy in the $100K - $200K range, but haven't fully decided how high in that range we want to go.

What have you folks observed around your marina? Are the prices sliding back up? There sure seem to be a lot of vessels for sale out there.

Sounds right-on to me. Very few new boats built in the past few years means a shortage of good used boats will be inevitable in future. How NEAR the future...? Can't say for sure, but I've noticed for-sale prices on a lot of boats creeping up lately. As for the lots of vessels for sale at the moment, I believe we're at a point where the glut is being thinned out. Buyers have been able to be choosey regarding price and boat condition, but the really good deals may be running out. My dock neighbor just sold, what was to me, MAYBE a $4800 bowrider--a '93 18 footer in much less than stellar condition-- for $7000 last week, to the first person of about 8 people who called in the first hour his ad came out. People are tired of going without, and hopefully demand will soon come up even with and surpass supply.

--Said the guy with 4 boats who'd REALLY like to see prices go back up!

Not sure what you're looking for, but you may be surprised as to what you could get new from the company that built my boat, Sailabration. Back in '06, my oat was ~$180k. Not sure what it would cost new now. I'm dreaming of selling mine and buying a new one from them. Check out the pictures of their recent boats on their Facebook page. They definitely break the mold of what you'd expect from a pontoon style houseboat.

Happy hunting!
