Thought I'd mention Westerbeke Gensets have oil in them that is supposed to be changed every 500 hrs. There is one mention of this in service manual, pretty easy to overlook! Mine has ended up with approx. 1,200 hrs on original oil without being changed. I don't think there's any harm done but you can bet yer arse it's changed now!

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I was searching for some info on westerbekes(Im bored).

Funny this came up though, I was reading through the OM for our gen this morning and I came up on this. Ours is a 1990 and only has a little over 300 hours but Im not sure if the oil should be changed since its so old. To change it, did you take it off the engine and turn it upside down like the OM says to do? I hate to screw any of the adjustments up on it since were new to this and may not know how to set it all back. Did you use 10w-30 oil? It says 10/30, I guess thats what it means.

While Im at it, and since I couldnt find anything about this in the search, where do you all get the oil filters for these engines? OM doesnt give much info on this but I found the part number on westerbekes website. Would rather pick one up at the local auto parts store. Type of spark plugs would be nice to know too.

DAAAYNG!!

You went a ways back to find this one! Was refering to the actual belt driven governor mounted to front of engine!NOT MOTOR OIL. Yes, it must be removed and turned upside down to drain. But connection to carb is a snap-off/snap-on connection, so no chance for FUBAR. Once drained and re-installed, there is a fill plug in top, and a fill to plug on side of governor. remove both and add oil (10-30, just as it says,) till it runs out of fill-to hole.

Amy decent parts store can cross Westie # to quality Wix,Puro,(stay away from Fram for chris-sake) oil filter.

May have to remove a plug to get a #, also OE brand would be a good idea.

Best,

Bob

Thanks a bunch alreadygone. Trying to do my research.

And yea, Ive read some horror stories from people using Fram filters. Pureone is a personal fav. I use the purolators on the Jeeps but Ill probably use just the plan pureones on the boat since weve got 3.

Check your PM's if you dont care.
