I have a 79 gibson 42' that I would like to replace the original holding tank and lines due to odor. The boat is about 5 hours away, so I cannot measure the tank. Could anybody tell me the height, width, and length of the tank so that I can order a new one. How much line and what size do I need? I will also be adding the sweetank system.
Thanks,
Jeff

tango, are you sure all 79 42' gibsons are the same? if you order the wrong size tank you'll be more frustrated in the end than you'd be making the extra trip to measure it, lines, etc..........just a thought.....chuckie

Or put more bluntly, surely you wouldn't take as gospel any answer you got here to a question that open??

Tango,
My husband and I replaced our waste and water tanks this spring. I would recommend pulling the old tank and carefully weighing your options before ordering the new tank. We were able to get a little more capacaty by doing this. After pulling our tanks we surveyed every place we could put a tank (dinette seats, and bilge), then we chose the largest area with ample clearance to get the biggest possible tank. This is a time consuming process if you do it yourself, but well worth the money saved. We would have paid our marina at least $3000.00 to do this and they would have used tanks and hose that were inferior to what we chose. They also would have just given us the same size tank. We now have larger tanks (which we built mocks of before ordering to ensure fit) , new high quality hoses, new copper water lines, a painted bilge and salvaged our hard wood floor. The estimate from our marina did not include salvaging our floor, buying high quality tanks (Ronco), or the painting, plumbing and wiring we did while we had it all open. We spent right at $1000.00 and learned a lot about our boat while getting a superior system.
Take your time, do it right and buy Peg Hall's book. Peg's book and her advice were life savers for us!

I purchased Pegs book and I am planning on making those changes, IF, I get to keep the boat. It is an awesome boat, '79 42' Gibson twin crusaders, kohler generator, great shape, always in covered slip with a clean bilge. Because of the odor, she would rather sell the Gibson and buy something more on the lines of a Bluewater (late 80's vintage). She really wants to sell it, but I would just as soon put a thousand or two in it (new tanks with a sweetank system and replace the carpet). She would also like the keel of the Bluewater as at lake of he Ozarks, we run into some HUGE rollers from all of the cruiser traffic.

She usually wins, so if you are looking for a great boat at a great price, let me know!
