A guy at my dock has a volvo 290 DP and has a question I am not sure of the answer. He is not internet savy so I am posting for him.

Coming back to the dock on Sunday he heard a clunk. In the process of securing his boat to the dock he came to the aft and noticed white "milk like" small pools of what I assume was grease or oil. The motor was still at idle he noticed a few more little pools float across the surface and then he shut the motor down. After thinking about it he came down to me for my advise. He goes on to say that when he was pulling into the slip the boat was not as responsive as normal. He said it needed more throttle to get it to move. His fisrt thought of the clunk sound was his wife moving about the deck helping secure the boat but now he is not so sure.

Now I am not a mechanic but it seems to me that the "milky" stuff is water mixed with oil and it could be coming from the drive. Maybe a bad seal? I told him I'd post on this site to get some more help.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hi Gunslinger/ Shore doesn't sound good, does it? I wonder if he wrapped a rope or fishing line around the prop and cut the seal down there? you're absolutely right--there's a hole or leak in the case someplace. Time for a haulout and looksee. Let us now what is found// Paul

Well here is what we found. Found the boot came loose from transom shield. The hose clamp snapped.

Doesn't that open up a large hole for water to enter the boat? Or does that boot just isolate the CV/universal joint?

Based on what you have said so far it seems that oil or grease that was behind the boot got washed out behind the boat and then turned milky so at least we are not talking about water and oil mixing inside the engine which would be real problems. I too wondered how water did not pour into the boat but I am not that familiar with all types of outdrives and I guess someone finally figured a way to have a seal on the inside of the transom behind the outdrive to prevent this from happening since a leaky boot has sunk many a boat in the slip. Pull it and replace it.
