On my '72 Drifter, the paint or Gel Coat is peeling off the roof/sun deck in small pieces. I probably have 15-20 1 foot by 1 foot or smaller areas where the paint/gel coat has peeled off and is exposing the fiberglass. Can I patch these areas, or do I need to totally redo the top? I'd like to patch them if it makes sense, and redo the top in the spring. If patching is OK, what should I use for the patching material? Any thoughts?

First,,,is it paint or gelcoat? Can you see other areas beginning to bubble, or is the rest well adhered? When you say fiberglass, are you seeing smooth white surface with cloth texture showing, or actual translucent, fuzzy, hairy looking glass fibers?

As for paint or gelcoat, I'm told it's gelcoat. It's about an eight of an inch thick, maybe a bit more, but not a quarter inch thick. It has a non slip finish (not smooth). The rest looks good, no bubbling.
I'm seeing the actual translucent, fuzzy, hairy looking glass fibers. There are no leaks, so I'm guessing that the roof is sealed real good.

Best patch material I've found for gelcoat is "Marine-Tex". Rather expensive, especially in the little 1/8 pint kits, but can be found in larger quantities if you look. Mixes 5to1, white, hard, apply with disposable plastic spatula(or cut your own from side of plastic containers) cover with saran wrap and smooth and work into desired finish, can be "patted" with crumpled aluminum foil ball to texture. When set up saran wrap simply pulls off. If applied now, by spring you'll be able to tell if you can prep and cover entire surface or if part of it will need to come off first.
