Replaced the waterpump impeller on the generator a week or two ago,
pumped more water than I've ever seen it pump. Haven't used the gen
since. This weekend, was going to use it one last time before
hauling the boat out next weekend, and she didn't start. I checked
the reset/breaker on the side and that didn't do it. Any
suggestions anyone? Were is the "sensor" that tells the generator
it is "sensing" a load?

You no doubt disabled the genset prior to the repair. Did you redo everything? One more thing....when the genset senses a load, does it turn over like it wants to start, or is there NOTHING? You may have missed one wire.

Actually, when I replaced the pump, it was on shore power. All I
did to test it was, turn the switches from shore power to
generator. She sensed a load and ran better than she ever has.
After that, I figured I wouldn't run it in the harbor
(thought i sucked something up in the harbor, why i was replacing
the impeller in the 1st place) and wait till I was in the river. I
haven't tried to use it till Sunday. I was all set, called
down to the Admiral (wife) asked her to switch over to generator,
then nothing. Absolutely nothing happened, no noise, no
nothing. Had my 1st mate (son) take the bridge, I went down
to take a look, checked the reset, it seemed fine. The last time it
kicked out, was when it toasted the the impeller. The only other
thing I screwed up last week was the starboard ignition switch
(left the hr meter hot, now there's 125 extra hrs on it). Are
there any wires for the gen on the ignition switch? What part of
the generator senses a load?

I know this is sort of obvious, but is the generator battery dead?

Batteries are good, all on charger at all times.

sounds like you have the older style kohler with the auto demand feature. my Nautaline had this and about a year after i sold it the demand relay went bad, and is no longer available from kohler. my gen had a remote start toggle on the rear of the control housing, a lot of kohlers had these install by kohler service techs as a way to remote start the generator from the engine compartment. I will look for my manual to see if i noted where this is wired in and you can do the same, if this works then the demand relay is bad and this is how you will need to start it.
p.s. was told by kohler the demand feature was outlawed by the coast gaurd and dropped from there line in the late 70's

Thanks MILLERTYME , any help will be appreciated. It's
about 10:38 pm here friday and I'm on the boat. I wanted
to get a good start in the morning, trying to find the problem.
The marina hauls the boat out on monday, so I want to get it
run up on some stabilized fuel.

I looked it up on my old wiring schematics and the remote start/stop switch goes between terminals 3 & 4 on the controller terminal strip. A simple toggle switch will work, if this starts your generator then your problem is with the demand relay which is no longer available. It would be easy to pull wires to a switch inside the dash(or even mount a switch at the fire wall) to start the generator.

MILLERTYME, where is the "controller terminal strip" located? Is it
under the electrical cover on the generator? I haven't a
clue. What your saying is, that a toggle switch wired between
terminals 3 & 4 on the controller terminal strip, should in
fact let the generator start and shut it down by the
switch, if of course the demand relay is the problem? What
size/type wire and switch would I want? Electrical is not my cup of
tea. I have to get this thing to start, I've got to get it
winterized. (Chicago area)

the terminal strip is located under the electrical control cover. on my mid sevenyties model it was to the L/H side if you are looking form the pulley end. You can wire in the switch with # 12 stranded wire and yes you will be able to start and stop the generator with this switch. some of times there is already a switch mounted on the rear of the control panel, this is done by alot of kohler generator service men to allow them to remote start the generator.

This switch that is sometimes wired in, is it different from the
"breaker" push button that stick's through that cover on the
opposite end from the pulleys? I'm forever indebted to you.
Just being able to wire a manual switch will be a tremendous
plus. I still think I left something unhooked, but for the life of
me, I can't find it. Thanks MILLERTYME,
RC.

yes it is a toggle switch not the curcuit breaker. I will see if i can scan in a wiring diagram for you to down load so you can re-check your wiring.

MILLERTYME, I finally got back to the boat last weekend. I had been
figuring the worst, and as it turns out, the reason the gen
didn't start, was like TONKA said, a dead battery. The battery
charger is only a 2 bank unit. I felt like such a fool. Over looked
the obvious. All is now winterized. I appreciate all your help
guys.
