On the exterrior, is the old hand painted name of boat and port, we will eventually repaint the entire boat, typical material used on houseboats back in the late 80's gel coated, the name of the boat etc is black paint on a white background, we will repaint the boat white but would like to learn the best method of getting this lettering removed so as not to have it bleed through the next paint job.

What r your thoughts on using a professioanl made decal name, over having a profesional paint a new name on the boat:

In my experience marine paint covers pretty well. I'd sand the area smooth and paint just the transom with a couple coats of good marine white; It should cover the name no problem.

Plastic decals from a sign shop (or online) work pretty well. They're easy to install yourself, and probably a lot less expensive than a signpainter. However if you want something really fancy the professional might be the better way to go. A painted name is probably more durable but also harder to remove.

I failed to mention the previous ownner painted the name on the side, I kept re -reading about painting the transome, I wish it was on the transome its in a very visable area on the side. If the name bleds through after the pre work and repainting I guess I could go with piece of sheeting or plex a glass to cover the area with the new name on that.

glad to hear you think the marine paint should cover the black name, Ill be repaintting the area white then putting the name over the same area

Now if that Easy Off works this guy is a genius. Such a simple solution. I would replace with a decal rather than repaint. There are very few real signpainters left and even they have gone to the computer generated stuff.

Bob is talking about gelcoat. This is an aluminum hull, if it's painted, the oven cleaner could take off more than the name. I'd try it in an inconspicuous spot first.

its lettered on the cabin surface thats gel coated not on the alum hull.

i really dont want to take it down through the gel coat, im hoping the piant i buy will do the job, im afraid ill have to use a plate of a sort to letter and place over this section at least he only lettered one side

You should definitely be able to find a solvent that will take paint off gelcoat without doing much damage. Plus if you do slightly damage your gelcoat, you should be able to fix this damage, however, then your fixed gelcoat might look better than the rest of your boat.

I've removed paint from gelcoat (sometimes accidentally) with many products. Just this spring I removed painted on hull id numbers off a jetski. I think I used a combo of a weak citric based paint stripper, goof-off, and a scotch brite pad. Buffed and polished afterwards and it came out perfectly. Only problem I had was my surface was so slick the stick on id numbers I used afterwards didn't adhere very well and I lost a few.

IM in the houseboat building capital of the south ill speak with the local sign pro who names and letters all the boats here (mostly decals) I know he once told me he wouldnt touch removing a painted name ill see what he suggest. Maybe when you work on mega $ boats you dont want to fight mr deep pockets
