Careful not to crank it too long or you'll end up with water in the the block.

I'm not sure exactly how it works but I believe it is due to the exhaust filling with sea water and back pressure causes the water to backflow into the block.

As always, I learned the hard way (brand new diesel generator).

Have you bled the air from your fuel system? If not, start by loosening the fuel line fitting feeding the injector pump and crank the engine over until fuel squirts out (strongly). Fuel will come out along with air bubbles but until all of the air is purged from the lines fuel won't pass. The air compresses and no fuel can pass the injectors until all of the air is out. If you have a safety shut down system on your genset, make sure you turn the switch off between cranking or your fuel solenoid will close each time. After bleeding the fuel line to the injector pump your next step is to loosen the fuel line fittings where they attach directly to the injectors. Now crank the engine until good clean (no air) fuel comes out. While cranking you can start to tighten the fuel line fittings and the engine should start running on one cylinder, then two, .... My Yanmar powered genset used to get air in the lines before I installed an electric boost pump between the fuel tank and the Yanmar fuel pump. Good luck and start charging your batteries.

I don't think you'd be able to plug up a diesel's exhaust enough to prevent it from starting due to the high compression they have. If it was running OK when you shut it down last time and it cranks over good, it almost has to be a fuel problem. My dad always said that with a diesel as long as you've got compression, air, and fuel it's going to run. I've never heard of a self bleeding "real" diesel with direct port injection. To be efficient the injectors have a spring loaded check valve that doesn't open until the pressure builds way up (> 1000psi) and then quickly shuts off when the pressure comes down. This provides a nearly perfectly metered spurt of fuel into the cylinder without any after dribble which causes black smoke. When there's air in the system, the air compresses and the injector never gets a chance to open. I still think you have a fuel problem...Good luck.

Your dad is right. So if it won't fire on WD-40 then your problem might be sticky valves (no compression). I'd pull the valve cover and check.

Ted,
Sounds like you are getting ready for trip to Texas once the engine kicks off.
