I read somewhere about someone on a Gibson who decided to replace the carpet and it might have been on here.I just want to say that you were right. There were thousands of staples in the old carpet and I spent hours removing the carpet and all the staples but in the end the new carpet makes the boat except for the right knee I blew out (surgery is Dec 19th) trying to pull up the carpet in the cuddy.
Also, for the gentleman who responded about my upper helm steering: Teleflex does not have the greatest site but I am learning more about hydraulic steering and will figure out how to fix the upper helm steering if it kills me.
Happy Holidays everyone.................

Yessir, that would have been me. About 2 1/2 years ago we replaced the carpet in the aft cabin and galley with tile. The salon and steps leading to the forward births we replaced with new carpet. That is when we found out that Gibson owns stock in one of the major staple manufacturers in the country. Thousands of them. Three tools worked best---an awl, channel lock pliers and needle nose pliers. The job took most of a day and ruined a few backs and a lot of knuckles. When we were done however, it looked real good and we were happy to have done it but it ain't gonna happen again.

Sorry to hear about your knee, at least no one can complain Gibson's carpet pulls up.
What type of steering do you have? What's it not doing?

I have a 1998 Gibson Sport 37 with upper helm steering. It seems like the upper helm steering doesnt work.I can turn the wheel and it never comes to a stop like the downstairs wheel.I have not had a great deal of time to look into it and I am learning about Teleflex Hydraulic steering.Any ideas to troubleshoot would be great.Or maybe this is normal but I dont see how you can just keep turning the wheel in one direction and it never stops......

There was another thread on this same problem earlier this week. Check that thread, it sounds like it applies to your situation as well.

yes there is another great thread on here about filling and bleeding your system. Your upper reservoir is most likely OUT of fluid. Provided there are no major leaks in the system, getting that bridge steering working will be easy by just adding fluid. Take some rags with you too!

I had the same problem when I first got my boat. I would fill the upper steering pump each time before I used it. During the heat of the summer where outside temps reached 125 degrres the fluid would leak out the front seal where the shaft comes out and on to the deck. Finally I solved this problem by attaching a stainless 1 gal race car overflow bottle purchased at Summit Racing and mounting it at the highest point under the flybridge. I connected the tank via a stainless hose to the upper port that was plugged and filled the tank half way. Now when I get expansion it flows into the tank and when it cools down it's pulled back into the pump.

Ej,
I hadnt thought about that.I have been doing so much to the boat to rehab it even though it is a 98 ,my standards are a little higher than the original owners,I guess.Anyway,I have just ordered the fluid and fill kit and hope to resolve this in the next week. But I will be watching for a leak like you are talking about. Thanks
