This has probably already been discussed here, but in case some of you havent heard about this; Kohler generators built between 1950 and 1989 from 2kw to 7.5kw has a retrofit on the exhaust system. The original was a steel pipe that has a tendancy to rust out and leak. The new one is stainless steel and will be replaced at no cost to the customer by Kohler. I have the original and waiting on word from a neighbor at our marina to see if his has been updated before calling Kohler. You can check the Kohler website, marine, support to get the full story. Gas or diesel or both?
I was told my Westerbeke is really a Koler engine with a Onan generator attached & painted red. If it's true, then mine falls within this period.
Was there any mention of other manufactures they supplied engines to?

Gas. Nothing else mentioned, but you might want to read it for yourself. This could be a CO problem and should be checked out and if they are going to pay for the upgrade...might save some lives.

I had it done on my 7.5 Kohler. Kohler did a great job, I did not have to lift a finger, they sent someone from Atlanta to Lake Eufaula Al just for my boat. Because of liability issues they will not let you do it your self.

We checked the rest of the boats at the marina and mine was the only one not upgraded. Probably more out there needs fixin too. Glad to find out about it before problems start.

I also had mine repaired and it works fine But......... it took
some 6 months of constant calling, pleading and practically
badgering the two nearest service centers until one came to repair
it. Then when he got there he didn't have the right stuff to hook
it up and I had to run for clamps and stuff. The tech said warranty
labor did not pay well enough so that put me to the bottom of the
list. Finally it was repaired and we could feel safer about our
family and guests the following holiday weekend.

Just a follow up on the exhaust pipe replacement. Kohler sent a guy out today, I was busy and couldnt be there, but when I got there, the job was done, mechanic gone. Perfect installation, new hoses, clamps, no mess. Great job! I hope everyone checks out there generators and be sure you get this upgrade done if you need it. About time to dump the antifreeze and hit the river!!!!
