I am in the process of planning out a redo of the back bedroom on a 44' Standard built in 1983.  One of the things I am considering is putting in new updated paneling.  I have yet to attempt to pull the first layer of paneling down and wanted to find out if any of you have removed paneling from a Gibson of this age and what can I expect? What is behind this stuff?

Also, if it is easier to just panel over the old panel, how will the windows work with the new width??

Any help you can provide is always greatly appreciated.

Not a resident expert on this but Ive seen a gib or 2 get redone. The windows have a channel that is made for the exact thickness wall your dealing with. I would not panel over. Also if you see water stains on your paneling--get ready for rot in the wall. The windows are notorious for leaking into the wall. You must remove them and reseal them before the new paneling is applied( or it will get ruined). Hope I didn't scare you.

BrokerDave... Thanks for the info and word of caution.  When doing this I figured it would be a good time to reseal the windows so, with your advice, it will now be a "must do" item on the list.

Okay so now knowing that I need to take the old paneling off to do this, what is behind there and how is it attached?  Also, any recommended modifications while I have the paneling off (like pulling more wiring) or something like that?

I have read that some will install 1 x 4 slates on the rear wall, add insulation and panel over for sound and heat reduction from the engine compartment.

That was my next comment. Nothing special is behind the paneling. Half size studs and nailed on paneling. just like a house but smaller scale. But there is NO insulation. It is good to go back with some for sound and heat and cool retention. My choice would be styrofoam sheets if you could acquire them. This material has excellent r-value and wont retain moisture. Also has great sound deadening quality.
