Our HB needs a access hole on our front deck. Big enough to step down into.

I understand the issue of cutting the top deck material; the boat is a 58 ft Alum hull JamesTowner: My back hatch has a cupped lipp the lid sits inside and keeps the bilage area dry.

My question how hard will it be to keep surface water from blow in rain and heavy waves ..........from getting in the new hatch lid

When this boat was built it was designed as a rental so they kept a heavy sleeper sofa over the inside hatch and kept the curious out........ We rreally need to have access up front

IM not going to try and put a round peg in the square hole if its major issue thanks

Only acceptable solution that wouldn't kill boats resale potential and be acobbled mess would be to have a competent welding shop fabricate a new "frame" and door assembly. Then cut hole in deck and either weld or rivet/glue in place. Keep in mind, when opening is cut, it will most likely weaken bracing that's in place underneath and will need to be re-attached to your new frame . probably be worth the expense if you plan to keep boat several years, but wouldn't be feasable if trading up in next couple years.

yes Id hope to up grade and the exspense would be hard to justify, with the cost etc....Ill watch and listen to others suggestions, Im satisfied I wouldnt compromise the hull strength. But keeping it dry is paramont

A professionally made hatch like your stern hatch would keep rain and spray out, but to keep it 100% watertight against boarding seas won't be easy. You may have to bolt it shut with a gasket.

Jamestowner is out of business........It can be done...but will require a welder and replacing the front deck carpeting

Might be a good project for NEXT winter, after you've had a season without the hidabed.

It's amazing the things you don't really need after you've used the boat for a while.

A pre-fabbed hatch with a gutter, hatch door, and over lapping flap seem to be the best idea. This would be shop work and much easier and cheaper. Installation should be easy should you decide to bolt it on or weld.
