During warm winter days our boat gets overrun with large blackbirds. The sit on the rails and unload their bowels...and this makes a big mess. Sometimes it appears they have dined on tar, the mess is so hard to wash off.
Discharging my shotgun over the boat always scares them off but it scares the neighbors as well. I've got 2 large fake owls on the boat and the boathouse but the birds ignore them after awhile. Help...I'm getting tired of this daily crapfest.

If you have water available, try one of these: http://www.pestproducts.com/scarecrow.htm

Some of the sites have videos.

I have one... I use it to keep the dogs from running up and down the fence barking at the neighbor's mutts. They learn really quick how far it will reach, though, so I have to move it around.

I also tried setting it close to the bird feeder to deter squirrels; it has to be really close so the birds are above it's field of vision, but it will definitely set a squirrel packing!

For a practical joke you can put one next to your driveway...

I can give testament that that scarecrow device really works!

My garden is right on a deer path and deer go out of their way to avoid it.

The only problem on a boat is you’d have to have water pressure to it at all times.

It doesn’t continuously run so if you have a on-demand pump it might work.

The scarecrow gets me sometimes too when I forget it's on.

This looks like a great idea. Thanks for all of the good feedback. I'll order one and let you all know how it worked. I guess I'll have to get a retriever (dog) if I want to enjoy blackbird pie as they all fall in the water.
