I watched as my marine mechanic and his helper, installed 2,- 50 gallon tanks on our boat today from scratch not even a fill cap, glad I didnt tackle the project, for something sounding so simple,
set em in, drill a few holes, fasten some straping attaching a couple rubber lines
(fill & vent), run some wire install a couple gauges, an fasten a few clamps.
then do it again for the second tank ..... On the lake, air temp cold and ugh
I was surprised to learn a plastic tank has to have a static ground, and the tool he used to cut the bigger hole in the hull wasn't the typical hole saw bit
I get the new engine next week
.......... the mechanic was in- service last week he talked about the additives the engine makers are touting, highly recommended regarding our fuel we buy on the lake, cautioned me to keep my fule as fresh as possible, advised against topping off just to have full tanks and itjsut sitting,
anyone else, keep an additive for refuleing perposes

Actually the ground is to dissipate any static that builds up when fueling. Oddly enough, fuel flowing through a fuel hose creates static charges. So all metal fitting have to be grounded. Even if your fuel fill is plastic, but chrome plated it has to be grounded. It's good to know they did it right.

I add Sta-Bil every time I fuel. Home is 5-6 hours from my boat, so I don't get to the lake every weekend. My mechanic recommended adding stabilizer for fuel that's going to sit. Sta-Bil is relatively low-cost and I figure it can't hurt...hence, every time I fuel. A 32 oz. bottle treats 80 gallons of gas. Beats the cost of carburator repair.

I know one thing IM sure going to find a good gas treatment and stick with it and buy what i think ill need in the way of fuel..............
do you think the gentle motion of the gas in our tanks will help the gas have a longer shelf life than gas just stored in a can..... or is it just a brake down thats going to occur regardless

Eventually it will break down, what's called phase separation, but stabilizers will help delay that for months.

Ike I hope your right on gas life, several months with a treatment I hope some of those guys that know there specs and gravity and formula's chime in on this isue .
The less time at a fuel station is that much less time one has to deal with those things one cant control alone

Well, these days with E-10 most of the gurus on this are recommending that boats stored for the winter have either empty tanks, or use fuel stabilizers. In northerly climes we're talking 5 to 6 months on the hard. So it should last a couple of months ok. Make sure you follow the instructions on the label as to the amount per gallon to get the right concentration.
