Hello there I just purchase a 1972 Stardust with a leaking roof
after inspecting the roof I found some soft spots and was
thinking of repairing or replacing the roof . I believe its a
fiberglass roof. I have posted on other forums and got a bland
answers not anything worth repeating. I looked at other pics of
roofs and i see that roof repairs are done many different
ways. I was also told to use marine plywood but upon looking at
mine and others I realize that they are not marine plywood.
Does anyone know what is the truth of repair and replacing
roofing. I am looking for a answer that make sense if that
possible.

1 Are you going to replace the entire roof or just repair the bad areas? I'm assuming that you are going to repair the bad areas only. You would remove the affected areas and replace the decking with plywood of like kind and quality. You would then apply glass cloth and a coating of gelcoat over the affected areas. You may elect to gel coat the entire roof.
2 Since you have roof leaks how much rust damage did it cause in the hull. damaged areas will have to be cut out and replaced.
3 We could give you more definitive help if you could publish the results of your purchase survey.
Question: Since this is an old steel boat, before you start this project, and lay out any money, make sure you have an assured source of insurance and dockage when your repairs are completed. Others on another forum have been unable to obtain insurance.

Thanks for the help I had a feeling. The boat is in a place
that is going to repair the botton and do regular hull inspection
and maintenance for me. The real damage from the roof was the the
interior walls and ceiling. If there any advice on a good insurance
company for steel hulls I appreciate it . As far as slip we beleive
we have found one. All advice for this 72 Stardust will be
appreciated as this is my first Houseboat this is a good boat and
was taken care of at one time i dont see too much money invested to
get back in the water but with no guidance it will be harder to
watch expences.

Insurance on a steel boat is a BIG problem. boats are on the hard because the owners cant get it. Check with your homeowners provider. If you find insurance please share it with the group. Good Luck. Please fill out your profile.

Our boat was 18 years old when we bought it, I called my Allstate agent, she didn't flinch a bit. Of course, she's insured everything I've owned in the past 33 years, maybe that has something to do with it? (I had a good survey in hand too)
Sorry, I don't have any advice to offer on the roof other than to listen to these guys that do! Good luck.

Thanks for the advise everything going well with the boat and yes
we did already secure a slip and insurance with allstate same
response both was very easy to do and that was a surprise. We will
be at Lake Alltoona in GA at a very nice marina. But i still
need some advise on the roof but I guess what ill do ill use
a hole saw and cut into the bad area and see what materials they
use and how thick it is. Other than that I really would like
to find a owners manual for this boat (72 Stardust)

Chief we also have a 72 Stardust. Ours is a 42 foot. I re walled
and re floored the whole lower end last spring. Both are 19/32 or
5/8 ply. So the roof is most likely the same. I did not have the re
do the roof because it is all SS. Ours leaked around the windows.
Stardust used 1 x 1/4 staples, hard to find and no glue or
caulk on the but joints. I used 5200 and biscuits. If
you end up pulling the roof off and have leaks around the windows
or in the corners I would replace the walls at that time. It is a
pain the do later. It only took a long day to do the back end with
me and my son. Good luck with yours. We love our old but paid for
tank.

Cheif, how is the roof going? I was thinking about it the other
day. Instead of glassing it could you use a rubber roofing
system, like they use on flat roofs.

Thanks for the advice we have been looking at that because the
majority of the repairs we are doing is in a no walk zone. Plus i
was thinking or just replacing the soft spots does any one have a
opinion on that ? We have 2 more months before it warm enough to
begin doing the fiber glassing so we have time.
