Worked fine last year, but once early on and now regularly, 6.5 Onan will surge when first started, level off when loaded, then start surging again after a few minutes. When surge gets "full swing" engine will fail to recover and die. Seems almost as if running out of fuel, but I'd appreciate anyone with prior experience chiming up.

Could it be overheating?

That sounds like my friend's westerbeke this weekend.

We replaced the impeller - pulled out a couple of pieces of rubber from the inlet valve and it ran perfect

Just a thought

Air cooled or water cooled? I've owned several "RV" type air-cooled Onans (have 2 right now, a 6.5 in our motorhome, and 4 in our Party Cruiser)

Since it worked fine last year, fuel delivery is your likely culprit. You may have had some guck in the float bowl that's been sucked up in the main jet and causing it to run lean, or your fuel pump may be getting weak or going 'intermittent'. Do like OHB sez and open the main jet some, and see if it helps. Me, I'm leaning towards the fuel pump since it's totally dying on you...

Another thing to check is the automatic choke, make sure it's working ok...

No overheat. Pumping excellently. No overheat, as it will restart immediately.

Not sure which is "main" jet, but will geve 'em a look. What about auto-choke??

I have a 6.5 ( 84') and had a similar problem. I fixed it by converting over to a different ignition system. I now can use automotive spark plugs, wires and a much cheaper ignition coil. Another possible problem is where the governor spring connects to the linkage. If it is too far down the throttle will pulse as the spring pulls it back.

Tried fuel filter, but it looked as new (cartridge in an old fashioned can), so I just put the old one back. Also filled filter housing with Berrymans ultimate fuel system cleaner, and let her sip that nearly straight!

OHB, tried fiddling with HS screw, no effect untill turned far enough in either direction that engine began to fail. Put it back more or less to original setting.

Am going to take boat to another marina with competent techs. They are leaning toward bad plug, or wire breaking down. They are the old military style sealed (screw on) type plugs and wires.

Also having a bit of AC problem. It won't cool quickly enough. Only 2-4 deg. difference in air pickup and outlet temps. Dock neighobor (newbie, don't really know him) says it's overcharded with freon. But it seems to be less efficient than last year,,,know it hasn't "grown" additional freon!
