Help me out here guys. I have a 1972 Stardust cruiser with a 1972 Mercruiser engine. We took it out the other day and while we were driving, the boat went into idle and would not go back into forward. The control goes forward, but it just won't shift. It will go into reverse, but obvoiusly I can't drive it like that! I am thinking it's a shifter cable, but how would I tell if I need to adjust it or replace it? Or if it isn't the cable, what else could it be?

Also, I have a 6.5kw mcck Onan generator that runs for about three minutes and then  shuts off, even with no load on it. I have replaced the impellor and changed the oil. I have even tried disconnecting the heat overload switch to see if it was faulty, but it still shuts off. And it's not a sputtering stop, like running out of gas, it's an automatic shut off, like an electrical problem. Any ideas of what it could be?

Dont claim to be an expert on this but here goes. starboard side of the carb there are 2 cables. One goes to your shifters MMC or what ever. The other runs down to your out drive. on the transom. Unhook the one down to the transom and try to move it to manuely shift it.  Dont run the engine but you can get somebody in the water and have them turn the prop to see if it goes into forward and revers and neutral.  If your cable pulls out of the housing at the end you unhooked the cable is broken. If this seems good work your controls and see if everything works at the engine.  It should be smooth and move an amount that will shift the drive. Good luck.
Your generator still seems like an overheat prob. Do you have good water out of the exhaust were all of the old impellar pieces accounted for. A lot of the time there are rubber parts left that will plug a heat exchanger or passage.  I dont  know yours but most gen sets have an overheat switch on the exhaust and on the engine   block.  Good luck. Post what you find.  Gen problems are the number on prob on all of the house boats i know of and on  all three that I have had.  A koler, Onan, and now a westerbeak. Just replace and overspeed circuit board that would quit after running about 30 min.

carbis   I was thinking about your problem and may have steared  you down a bad road. The first thing to do is watcch the shift mechanism at the  carb and have somebody work the shifters to see if it is moving anything. If it is working then unhook the cable to the out drive and try it manually.
