my brother just purchased a 1986 14x46 cloud nine. we removed the rail screws to remove the rails to move the boat. the screws were all loose.they look like 5/16 x 1 in. what size would be best to fasten the rails back down. alos, it has a exposed beam ceiling inside. thanks for all your help.

Can you get to the underside? If so you need to through-bolt all the stanchions with bolts and backing plates or at least big washers. There's a LOT of strain on them. You could use lag screws the next size larger (3/8"), but the problem will likely recur.

You may be able to find a "blind anchor" that will work. The old "Molly Bolt" comes to mind if you can find a suitable one. There are other types.

If they were loose there's a good chance you've had water intrusion and possibly rot. This needs to be repaired first. Then fill the holes with epoxy and re-drill.

I went with larger screws and 5200. The screws were not loose however.

5200 injected in the hole, light coat of 5200 on rail plate, screw down, then wipe excess 5200 from around the plate.

5200 is an adhesive/caulk by 3M... It sticks like Death and is just about as permanent. Probably about the best stuff you can use IF you never plan to take the assembly apart again. If you do, use something else.

We stuck copper sheeting on the hull and up the sides our (homemade boat-panel plywood) hulls with 3M 5200. Found it at Lowe's for about $11/tube. Takes lots. When we had to remove the copper to repair a couple of storm-damage holes in two pontoon sections, it took some real effort to peel the copper off. So the replaced copper got even MORE 5200.
