I have had a Westerbeke 15.0 BEG on the houseboat for a couple of years now. I love the genset but I think the governor is a real pain!!!! I can adjust it and it will work for a few months then it gets out of wack again only for me to adjust it again. It seems to be a never ending saga. I found a company, Zenith, that makes a Fuel Injection Kit for the Westerbeke Generators. (Zenith actually makes the Carb that comes on the Genset). Does anyone have any experience with the Zenith ZEEMS II Fuel Injection Kit. It supposedly has a frequency variation of less than .5 hertz from no load to full load.

Weve got a 1990 12.5 BTG westerbeke but weve never had any troubles with the governor. Sometimes it'll hunt a little but thats a simple adjustment.

Had no clue that Zenith made those carbs. Have they always made them? How much is their Fuel Injection kit? You would still need a governor with fuel injection, right? That just controls the throttle, it has nothing to do with the gas.

The thing I love about carbs is you can clean them in an evening and have it all up and running again. We bought our boat 5 years ago and had several issues with gas at the start. Our genset didnt even have a filter on it so the carb plugged up quickly as expected (fuel pump went bad too, likely caused by the dirt in the fuel). Weve cleaned it twice so were pro's at it now. I dont want to think about the problems you could have with fuel injection if something happened and some dirty fuel got to them.

Thanks for responding Jeepster,

I am not sure how long Zenith has made the Carbs for Westerbeke but I do know it has been quite a few years. As i understand it, the Fuel Injection kit uses an ECU to fire the injector to control engine speed. So no governor is needed. The kit basically replaces the Carb with a throttle body mounted on the exising intake manifold. The kit is a little pricey at $ 1,700.00 but it claims to reduce fuel consumption by 25%. If you post your email address I can send you the manual. I tried to post it here but it is slightly too large.

I finally bought the Fuel Injection Kit for my Westerbeke 15.0 BEG. I am amazed at how precise it holds the engine speed at 1800 RPM's or 60HZ. No more lights blinking and bogging down of the generator when large loads are put on it. It even cut my fuel consumption in half. I am very impressed with it but I do think its still a little pricey!!

If you cut your fuel use in half, that basically means your old carb was dispensing WAY too much fuel, and that more than likely explains the governor problem you had.

I run 1.5 gallons an hour on my 15 Westerbeke. That is pretty much at "full" load - running air, stove, ....

I was consuming about 1.5-2 gallons per hour at full load. Full Load on my boat is about 40-45 amps.

Sorry for the late response.. My email is bacomb2@gmail.com..

If the governor is out of adjustment at all causing the engine to 'hunt' then the accelerator pump is constantly pumping fuel in the carb every time the governor moves the throttle arm. Either way, fuel injector is always the best approach. Just keep a good filter on it!

Got any pics of the setup?
