I currently have 2 outboards that I was planning on replacing with new ones. I just found a motor pod with a Volvo 6 cylinder and an outdrive. I am not to concerned about the fabrication to install the pod but would need to do steering cable not sure what this will entail but I am sure I will figure it out. My main question is the Volvo engine / outdrive any input from you folks??

Thanks!

I can't quite tell from the pictures, but that looks like they might be a Volvo 280 drives. If so, they're bulletproof. A bit old school, but good technology for the day. As a former Volvo-Penta owner, the only knock I have against them is a thin dealer network. The nearest Volvo service to my boat is about 300 miles away. But if you have a nearby dealer, they are great drives.

Having said that, you are taking on a lot of rigging headache. I put two new 115 HP Mercury outboards on my boat last year. They are fuel-injected four strokes and start and run as flawlessly as you would expect from brand four stroke fuel injected motors. I got enough from the sale of my old outboards that the new motors cost me about $9,000 (net) with installation. Installation, in the water, took about a day and a half. For that kind of money and ease of installation, I don't think I would want the hassle of rigging inboard/outboard motors on an outboard boat.

I understand, my old motors are garbage I will be lucky to get $1,000 for them and the two new motors are around $15,000. We have the boat out so the swap with the outboards will be painless for sure. Thanks for the input!!

$15,000. I see why you're looking used. What size outboards are you considering?

2 - 60 HP Evinrude E-Tec's with new props, electronic Tachs, key switch and wiring harness it is $15,500. I think I am still going to go with them. The volvo set up is tempting but then I would have to deal with steering cables and new shift / throttle cables. Not worth it. I actually found out I know the guy that is selling the volvo set up he is only asking $500 but it does need some out drive work. Oh well it is only money!! LOL

If you are interested in Mercs, I saw them advertised for $5,700 for four stroke EFI 60 hp. The big foot model (extra money well spent for a houseboat) was $5,900 for a four stroke EFI 60. When I bought mine, the dealer discounted them further from these prices. I did have to pay for shipping but not sales tax.

I need to stay with Evinrude's or I would have to change out my shift / throttle linkage. I don't think the interchange.

FWIW, that Volvo outdrive is a 270-- the small semi-triangle shaped exhaust port above the prop is the giveaway, the 280's have the 1" tall x about 8" long exhaust port. And the 270 is a good drive in its own right...

Not sure, whenever everyone else is ready. I still haven't done our pontoons, need some good weather! I am could be ready in a couple of weeks or so if I had to. I am waiting to order the new motors until I have to. Is your boat out of the water??

No. They only have room for / allow two boats in the yard at a time and the two that came out in the fall are still there. Insurance claims, so dont know if that is part of the problem or not. When I was up a couple weeks ago it looked like one boat was having fairly major renovation work done, with a ways to go, and the othe boat looked to have had nothing done yet. Shelly said she will guarantee me a spot this fall. I should have known better than to hope to haul out in the winter/ spring.

So you are going to take your boat out next fall? Let me know I may pull mine again for what is cost's it is comforting for me to have it at home! The big blue Masterfab is Ron's and it didn't need much work, is it in the yard? And then the white Masterfab was the boat that had not been used forever. Are those the tow that are out? You would be welcome to bring your boat here, but you would have to remove the deck and everything on the top, a big pain for sure!

Almost got cold feet yesterday to swap our motors. Saw a 1988 Three Buoys 14 x 52 on CraigsList for $25K. We went and looked at it but decided to stay with our old steel pontoon 1978, 14 X 50 Kayot. While the Three Buoys was nice it would have needed painted, the decking redone, solar added and it wouldn't have been our own. I ordered the new outboards late Friday and hopefully all will go well to have the boat back in the water in the next 60 days or so. We added batteries so now we have 8 - Costco 6 volts charged by 525 watts of solar feeding a 3,000 watt inverter that then feeds an automatic transfer switch that feeds the 120v circuits. The Rust Oleum Coal Tar Epoxy is here waiting for a few nice days so we are close to completion of these upgrades.

Finished making the wiring harness for both engines today. 12 wires for each engine, so 48 soldier / splices. We are getting close!!

So, unless you are going to work like a madman the next couple of days and pay some big bucks to Mr. Parks, I'm guessing you won't be on the water this holiday weekend? Kim/Kimmee still out too, and Turner's won't be around this weekend either. Sounds like a quiet time with my family on the water. Hope to see you soon!!!

Yeah, I probably won't be on the water for another month or so. Plan on being out there in time for the July 4 holiday, will probably be on the lake most of that week. I just got back from two weeks on the east coast for work and that makes it hard! I did get the Tachs, ignition switch's and the steering helm unit installed this evening. Hoping for a big weekend coming up and getting lot's done.
