well the first holiday weekend is behind us. it was awesome . we had family and friends onboard for a trip down the mighty ohio. all was great till we decided to stop at a local watering hole for a cool one and some dinner. i was walking it into a dock when all the sudden....the port motor didnt seem to be going in gear. luckily a fellow gibson owner and some other people on the dock helped us in. when i got it tied off i raised the engine hatch and had my friend put the motor in gear. hmmmm, the drive shaft is spinning, then we all noticed the prop shaft had slid out of the coupling. oh well, were here lets eat.....lol. i pulled the coupling the next morning and the key way was worn and the set screws were bad so i'm getting a new one today. now, should i pull the other coupling and check it out as well? were planning on a 160 mile trip in july and i dont want that problem again. hot weather, a cool breeze and a good boat, ya gotta love summer.

To us, a good weekend on the lake is when we come back into the marina and all the stuff that was working when we left is STILL working. I'll bet we all have better mechanical skills because of our houseboating. Repairs around the house seem easy, because you have time, and the house isn't likely to float away or sink!

Had a great weekend in these parts, plenty of sun and adult beverages, and I did my part to keep Exxon/Mobile in business.

well, we have to have both shafts redone. the machine shop is going to weld and recut the keyways on both shafts, match the new split couplers to the shafts, true them as well, all for a grand total of 160$ and maybe 3 hours labor for me and my brother,a pretty cheap fix.now we can make our trip in july with a lil less worry.
