Routine Maintenance
I have owned several small boats and only 2 Mid size boats and they were both sailboats with small diesels.
There is not that much routine maintenance on the sailboat itself. The diesel get oil change once a year. I check the batteries once a month. I Haul out every 2 years.
I just bought a 1986 houseboat with a pointed front end with twin 350 crusaders.
Probably 90% of the time I will be doing 6-7 Kts and sometimes 15 - 18 kts, but not all that often and I will be taking long trips.
Since I am new to mid size power boats with gas engines, I will act? like I don't know anything.
Sooooooooo........What routine maintenance do you guys do, and at what frequency, whether it be in months, engine hours or whatever?
Thanks in advance
Tony B

I used the 'search' on here and found some older posts.

Seems like some recommend oil changes at 100 Hrs on mains and gens.
The way I see it is if were a car, 100 hrs at 60 mph =6,000 miles. I'm OK with this.

As for the Generator, 100 Hrs = every 4 days. If that is what it is, then, that's what it is. Just seems kind of strange changing oil every 4 days, but so be it.

That does not sound right for the generator. You will sometimes be using you boat differently than the regular houseboater. You might want to try some of the cruising sites for a different perspective.

i change the oil in my mains and gen every fall before i pull out and put lucas oil additive in them all, its the cheapest money you can spend on a boat. my shaft packing has been in 3 years and 100 hours , when i pulled the shafts to have them re-keyed and put on new couplers it still looked new. the motors and gen are still pumping good water after 3 years and 100 hours so i havent changed the impellers.i haul out every year and check the bottom then.thats all i do besides fix whatnots.my motors have 650 hours, the gen has 1800 and all run fine.

I have owned a lot of small diesel and gas, generators and welders, etc. All were 3 and 4 cylinder. We changed oil at 150 hrs and received good service from them. On a boat, with the clean enviorment, you could extend the time to 200 hrs.

Generators aren't subjected to the load and throttle variances that your boat's engine is. Because of that the oil isn't collecting much in the way of combustion by-products or gasoline from cylinder washdown. So, genny oil simply doesn't need to be changed all that often

And really, we change our oil more often than necessary anyway. It's been proven (so I've read) during tests with New York taxi cabs that 10,000 mile oil and the engines its in showed no significant differences between 3000 mile oil & engines. And what's the average speed of a New York taxi while the engine's running, 15 mph? At 10000 miles that's 666 hours of engine time, and it's still 200 hours at only 3000 miles.

Frequent oil changes may be cheap insurance, but 50 hour oil changes do very little aside from keeping price of oil high. (just my opinion)
