I pulled up the carpet in my main salon today. There is still a good amount of adhesive residue left behind and also some of the underside of the carpet itself.

What is the best/easiest way to remove this stuff?

I was thinking of a heat gun. Any other solutions?

go to a carpet store. they have a spray you can use on the glue with a putty knife, they used it on 2 of our boats. we then had them lay the new carpet as they would in a house with padding and tack strips.....no more glue or staples!!

Thanks Rick

My intentions are to lay down a teak and holly floor - plywood. If I get a chance today I will take the boat out for a hard run and see if this is practical based on noise. if not, we will use carpet again.

I would go with the teak and holly AND maybe an area rug.

Go with the carpet. DO NOT glue it down.

1. It's quiet

2. It's not slippery

3. It's cheap enough to change out every 3/5 years

4. It's foot friendly

5. I like it.

We glued the edges here and there works fine. I agree with OHB.

Thanks for the helpful hints folks.
Weather was too bad today to take boat for a run. Started engines and ran them in the dock. They were pretty quiet. Will try again Sunday for a 'noise level' run. I'm pretty sure that the noise will not be an issue. We normally buy a relatively inexpensive throw rug every year for the main salon during the winter months and chuck in the spring and buy a new one every year. During the summer months, carpeting holds the heat in.

As for the glue thing. I tried a heat gun and it worked really well if I was going to re-carpet, but I am not. Also the existing corners of the plywood are damaged and would take a while to repair strong enough for my needs. Since I am always on limited time, I figure I can cut new plywoood faster than I could clean and repair the existing ply pieces. I will be gluing the teak and holly ply down on top of the new ply.
