We are going to replace aluminum waste holding tanks with polyethylene ones this fall. One of the aluminum tanks started leaking and the installed (wetted) 3-wire level sender appears to be inoperable - the gauge is pegged regardless of tank level.
Where can one find the type of level sensor that is fixed to the exterior surface of a polyethylene waste holding tank? And does this type work with a Medallion gauge?

well from what I have been told by most people waste tank guages dont work very well. THey will work good at first and then after a while stop working. If you go witha plastic tank u can tell with a light shining on it how full it is.

Hello Watts, Each year at the Louisville House Boat Show there are vendors who sell Holding Tank Gauges that glue to outside of Plastic tanks and the display unit can be installed any where you want it. Note: They read through PLASTIC only.

I'm looking at putting in SeeLevel tank monitors in next year.
Check out the following link:
http://www.rvgauge.com/products/model_7094.shtml
The "sending unit" is a circuit board you cut to fit and attach to
the outside our your Poly tanks.

This is the tank level monitoring system you want:
http://ferriellosales.com/default.php Almost all the houseboat mfr
has switched to 'em because they do work and are reasonably priced.
Although the sender that attaches to the outside of the tank won't
work on a metal tank, they do have one that will work.

It was, but Snake River pretty much out of business now.
Dennis Ferriello was their national sales manager for a number of
years...when he SR came to a NOT amicable parting of ways--due in
part to the deterioration of the quality of the products--Dennis
hired SR's head of engineering and started his own competing
company. Their "Profile" gauges are so superior to SR's that now
EVERY major houseboat mfr has switched to them and only one
sailboat mfr still uses SR. The owner sold his remaining inventory
to a company based in AL (SR was based in ID), who've put a
website, but none of the info on it has been updated since 2004 and
the new owners have no mfring facility.
I've known Dennis for about 10 years...He had a booth at Louisville
every year until this year, so some of you may have met him. He'd
begun sharing his concerns about the deterioration of SR products
with me a couple of years before he finally decided to leave and
make products to his standards. He didn't have to try very hard to
talk Dave into coming with him, 'cuz Dave had also become
discouraged at SR.
Btw...the Profile senders and panels are interchangeable with SR,
so if you have a SR system that isn't working right any more,
call Dennis. NObody is more committed to quality and customer
service than he is, and he stands behind his products 100%.

I recently purchased a couple of Rod Sensors for my metal holding
tanks (Waste & Water) with Profile Panel
Displays from Dennis at ferriellosales.com and they have
performed as promised. You can get a straight rod that
inserts from the top or a bent rod that inserts from the side wall
of the tank. They are very easy to install and Dennis is
available to answer any questions that you might have.

Thanks, all y'all, for the suggestions. We changed course and removed the holding tanks altogether, installed a Purasan system. It works as advertised, and my wife has the peace of mind that we don't have to go pump out somewhere (our marina as yet has no such facility). It was a PITA getting those 29 inch square tanks out the 30 inch square access hole, and the sanitation hose is a little tough to get over the hose barbs, but all-in-all not a bad installation experience.
