I am looking for a good way to clean my poly holding tank before the start of this season. I am trying to get some of the accumulated crud off of the sides. Last year I filled it twice, once with a baking soda mix and once with plain water but did not get as clean as I would like. Any Ideas? Thanks

Fill it with a strong solution of liquid detergent--Wisk, liquid Tide--and water. Let it sit for a  day or two, pump out and thoroughly rinse out.

Thanks for the reply. When you say strong, how strong? My tank is 80 gal.

A couple of jugs should be strong enough.

Well, thank y'all! A friend took that photo at a boat show last year. I decided after I saw it that it's time to let folks see the real me--still hot, but now in flashes.

Back on topic -- Is there a way in which the cleaning solution can completly be removed without going to a marina with pump out facilities? I would like to do the same thing but the marinas will not operate the pump out stations or turn on water until mid May. I am assuming that captainsquarters (cq) is cleaning the tank while installed in the boat , in a warm part of the country which has running water. I do not have that luxury and would like to get all this stuff accomplished before the season really gets going. I have a feeling that I may be SOL on this situation and will just have to suck it up and wait. Somehow that sentence did not sound right.

That last sentence did conjur up some interesting mental images.

Wait till May to do it. You can put the solution into the tank immediately after your first  pumpout/tank flushing--last thing before you close up the boat to go home...pump out and rinse out again first thing the following weekend. Better yet, use it as an excuse to take a beautiful spring midweek afternoon off to spend some time on the boat.

That sounds like the best and most entertaining way to take care of this situation without developing some new way to remove effluent from a tank without the proper tools. I can usually con enough people to go on a pump out cruise and get into there pockets for some gas money if I do it on a weekend but as you say, midweek is far better for watching what is around us. It can be pretty spectacular at that time of year. Thank you

I promise not to get my lips to close to that one fitting on the deck.

Is your boat under 66'? If so, I have an idea for you.

I was asking you, Ken...but I should have noticed that you'd already provided the answer in your signature.

I don't know if you're aware that the Mississippi river is NOT "no discharge"...that the  discharge of treated waste from a CG certified Type I MSD--i.e. PuraSan--is not only legal on boats <66' (boats 66'+ would need a Type II), but is actually a LOT cleaner than the river! If you have one installed, you don't have to use a holding tank...you'd be able to treat and discharge each flush. The PuraSan is a bit pricy, but worth it never to have deal with tank maintenance and pumpouts again. Check it out:

Thank you for the fast reply. I have thought about going to another waste system but you are right in saying that it is "a bit pricey". I do not think I could fully justify changing due to the abundance of marinas in the Red Wing, Minnesota area. All charge a reasonable price for a pump out ($5.00 + $5.00 tip). The amount of tip is at the owners discretion but I usually give that much when a good rinse or rinses is applied to the tank.

I had not thought about a thorough cleaning until cq brought it up and it is something I would like to do. Your suggestion on procedure will be followed and I am pretty sure I can get the old honey tank squeaky clean. Now all I need is some warm weather. Thank you
