Our boat needs a hot water heater for doing dishes, not much else.
While at Lowes I was looking at a 3rd world country ele. 110 12 gallon unit for about $170 says it draws 12 amps, and has a warrenty lasting the drive time from the lot.
we have shore power / along with the gen power which I dont intend to use except those nights when AC is a must.
we never go out for much more than a overnight trip the 2 of us....
we have dock H20, away from the dock I must rely on, " on demand 12 volt pumps" main question if i go this route will my on demand pump flo-jet size unknown at this posting.
would my pump have the power to provide the water through the hotwater system... I know its vague without knowing the size, its average water presure at the sinks
My boat only has a 12 gal 110v water heater with a sureflo pump for the water system and it works great. The reduced water flow that you get from the 12v system just makes the hot water last that much longer. It takes over an hour for the water to get hot but after that 4 of us can take showers without running out of hot water. And it doesn't have a check valve.
We usually just run the genset for breakfast and dinner while the inverter takes care of refrigeration and lighting in between. And...we run the hot water heater (and the inverter bank battery charger) while the genset is running so we have hot water for the dishes and showers. After the water is warmed up during the trip it heats up much quicker.
Also...to avoid stagnant water in your heater, use the hot water faucet when the water is unheated (for cold water) to keep the water fresh.

I don't use a check valve but I made sure I ran flared copper lines to the heater. Even the inlet can heat up and loosen a rubber hose to where you have a leak.
How the heck do you get four hot showers out of 12 gallons of water? I know that some people actually wet down, turn the water off and soap up and then rinse. But we can't seem to do that. We get about two showers out of an 18 gallon heater and the tail end of mine is getting cool. The wife does like to languish in the hot water.
