What are the current laws governing the discharge of gray water in the Chesapeake watershed. I've heard rumors that holding tanks for graywater may become a requirement. I am on a lake in PA that eventually drains into the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Anyone have any insights?

Gray water ("Galley, bath and shower water") from recreational vessels may legally be  discharged directly overboard in ALL U.S. waters except on a few closed fresh water inland lakes (notably Lake George NY, all the inland fresh water lakes in NH and one or two in CA) and some very small zones in the FL Keys National Marine Sanctuary where even bilge pumps cannot discharge. There is no gray water restriction in the Chesapeake Bay or in any of the rivers that feed it...nor is there any real likelihood that will change.

Peggy,

Is there a web site or contact where someone can get that information?

There are no websites devoted to what you don't have to do, only those that set forth regulations pertaining to existing laws detailing what you DO have to do. There are no laws that require gray water holding...so there are no websites that say there is no gray water holding, only those state laws that apply to the few inland waters on which gray water holding is required.

So you're just gonna have to trust me on this one. I've been at this for nearly 25 year...I KNOW what's legal and what isn't. And unless your're in northern CA, NH, VT or illegally anchored in the few small areas of the FKNMS, you do NOT have to hold gray water.

Who's telling you otherwise?
